Summary of your idea

The entrepreneurial idea that I have is not something very different and revolutionary but something that has been done in every country around the globe, be it developed or developing. The idea is about starting an agro project in my village, Hansapur, which is at a distance of approx. 2 hours from one of the major cities Pokhara, Nepal. We have a large area of land there, which has not come to use that much because all of our family members moved to Pokhara years ago and there is no one to look after it. Moreover, the main thing is that the whole village is now almost empty leaving only women and little children behind because people no more want to engage in farming and move to urban area in the search of better opportunities. The somewhat educated and rich people of that area have settled in major cities inside the country whereas the illiterate people specially youths have gone to golf countries for earning nominal amount of wage risking their lives. There are many instances where those youths have been cheated like not paying the wages they were promised and even dead because of adverse working environment. So, this project targets those women and youths of that area. I first want to start with cattle raring; cow, buffalo, goat, pig and chicken, seasonal vegetable; chayote, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum, chilly, cucumber, dill, potato, sweet potato, yam and so on, fruits like papaya, banana, pear, guava, grape fruit etc. and specially turmeric, ginger and black pepper. And, it has recently been found that the oil from the seed of sajeevan (Jatropha) can be used to operate diesel engine such as tractor, mill and cooking stove which can also be planted in that area.

Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development

The main target group would of this project are the youths who are forced to go abroad for earning nominal wages and risk their lives because of the adverse working environmental conditions there and the women who are unemployed and are engaged in subsistence farming. They will be first provided with necessary trainings regarding the use of modern technologies in farming which will make them efficient in their work, at the same time as they get wage employment in their own village the certain number of youths get the opportunity to earn enough without going abroad and the women will be able to economically self reliant. When the project is implemented the jods created will not just be the farm labor used directly in the farm land instead would be more diversified like the experts, personals for transporting the product to the market and those who will actually sell them in the market. No doubt any businesss success will be measured in terms of the actual profit they are able to make but apart from it, the success of this project will be based on the number of employment opportunity it would be able to create and at the same time the infrastructural development that will take place in that area. And, make the used of sajeevan substantial. Moreover, the idea is to create a separate market place in Pokhara where the products from Hansapur like meat items, diary items, vegetables and fruits in one place and even export outside the country.

Plans for implementation and sustainability

Like I have already said before, the land which will be used for this project is our own family land so we dont have to actually invest the heavy amount for acquiring the land even thought nominal amount is to be paid which will save thousands of dollars. So, our initial start up cost will be somewhere near hundred thousand dollars which will be spent on land reforms; plugging of fields, irrigating and use of fertilizers, making sheds for cattle, buying of cattle, buying seeds, wages for the works and experts and cost for selling them in the marketplace. So, we will be producing at the same time directly selling our products in the market. Since the investment is high, 50% of it will be invested through personal savings and personal loans whereas rest 50% from bank loans and loan for government for agricultural projects. We can get financial and technical assistance for Agriculture Ministry, Nepal Government also. There are various other organization with whom we can collaborate for assistance, good seeds and fertilizers and expertise.

Your profile

I am Swechchha Subedi,i am 19 and currently undergoing bachelor's degree second year in business administration. this is an idea which i have been working for a while now and main reason why i want to this project is that this roots to the place from where my father was born and lived his childhood. And, the present situation there is pitiful and think this project can really help in poverty reduction and empowerment of the people of that area. Moreover, this project can drag attention of the authority towards areas like this which have high potential but not yet materialized.
