Nawwar : turning science into art , for the whole world
Published on June 12, 2014 um 15:42
Summary of your idea
Nawwar(Arabic word for illuminate) is a revolutionary idea of turning studied sciences into 2D and 3D animation , by creating a library of animated videos for university and school students in the American, British and Egyptian systems. Nawwar will be the first of its kind in Egypt due to the absence of similar projects that consider the aforementioned diversity of educational systems. Focusing on the scientific material will help merging different systems serving many students. The videos contain: 1)A detailed explanation of the studied topics to help the students fully retain and understand them. 2)An attractive animation to get their attention and help them visualize the difficult concepts. 3)Mnemonics (songs, funny images ) to facilitate the memorization of important information . All the videos( from preparation of the scientific material till the graphics , animation and voice-over) are prepared by Nawwar team - mainly composed of students - and supervised by qualified professors. This means that students can pass on their experience since they faced the difficult parts in that subject themselves and know how to explain them with simplicity. There will be English and Arabic versions of the videos and another version in commonly spoken slang mix of English and Arabic making the videos much more understandable for the Egyptian and Arab students. Nevertheless, English terminology is delivered accurately. With all the latter combined, Nawwar aspires to mix visual arts and fun with education to create a new experience for all students which we believe would give rise to a better understanding of concepts and provide opportunities for more applications of Science that may ultimately contribute to the welfare of the society at large. All the videos will be posted for the public free of charge on Nawwars Youtube channel and its website.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Nawwars main target users are university and school students, in all the stages in the British, American and Egyptian systems. Nawwar ensures that all students regardless of their resources or educational background get the same high quality education for free. Nawwar creates a strong base of sciences and fixes common misconceptions in education through our videos. The videos (ranging 10-15 minutes) are an efficient way of studying since they are: 1)Always available and can be viewed anytime, anywhere so students learn at their own pace with their own rules. 2)Engaging - helping the students concentrate as they are not bored nor distracted by anything else. 3)Easily accessible through the website or Youtube via electronic devices with internet access . 4)An electronic format that can save the costs and logistics of handling paper based material. These innovative videos will target all types of learners (visual ,aural, verbal and logical). Animation and mnemonics use both audio and visual presentations thereby fostering the recalling ability and retentive memory of the learners. Imagery representation rather than symbolic description of facts build an internal representation of the concept studied and help bring to life scientific principles. Nawwar not only benefits the viewers but also its own team since they gain full understanding of the topics they work on given the effort spent on it. The exercises videos will include different solving techniques in order to cover all different systems. The videos will empower the teachers who have students in need of extra academic support. More importantly, videos are a platform where students can visualize all learning contents that are difficult or unaffordable in the classroom. Nawwar will stimulate the students creativity and improve their scientific sense, critical thinking and problem solving helping them achieve better results.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Nawwar aspires to become a non-profit organization. Any qualified volunteer can contribute to Nawwar. Nawwar will also offer internships, part-time and full-time jobs. Our target is to create one video per week, our production rate will increase as Nawwar team expands. Nawwar team puts a lot of effort in producing one video that goes through 4 phases: 1) Research and gathering information from trusted sources and various professors, 2) Explaining the lessons in a logical and accurate sequence , 3) Writing the explanation into a script, which is then creatively animated in the videos , 4) final review and criticizing of the video by the whole team ,the professors and a group of students for suggested improvements. Sources of funding include: 1)Sponsorship and partnership with famous organizations. 2)Donations and contributions from the public (crowdfunding). 3)Advertising on Youtube Channel and on the website. This funding will be used to pay for: 1)Part-time and full-time employees. 2)Covering the expenses of the website and Nawwar's office. 3)Paying for hired services. We expect that many schools integrate Nawwars videos in their system since these videos are reliable and beneficial to all the students. Our vision for the future : 1) Nawwar team will give sessions at schools to motivate them about sciences and trigger their enthusiasm. 2)The website - an online community for all students around the world - will contain the animated explanatory videos, exercises and quizzes for extra practice , discussions(for sharing questions and ideas), simulations and programs where students interactively explore experiments. 3) The talented Nawwar team members can teach other members different skills such as graphics design , animation (to help animating the videos), music composition and editing for creating mnemonics music and songs .
My name is Nada Donia, I am a twenty-year-old Egyptian girl currently studying Mechatronics Engineering in the 4th semester at the German University in Cairo (GUC) . Earlier education: I went to a French school (Sacré-Cur) following the national system in Egypt then switched to IGCSE in high school. Achievements: I am among the top students at school and University. I was Champion of Egypt twice in a row in two competitions of the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS). I worked as a teachers assistant for my maths teacher in high school. Hobbies: Playing violin and piano. I also have a diploma in multimedia . This explains my love for music, graphics , animation and arts in general. The inspiration for Nawwar came from the belief that young people have the potential to change this world if they harness their energy and time efficiently ! What motivates me for Nawwar is that education in Egypt has been a national problem for the government and the students since many years, therefore requires innovative solutions. It is time to revolutionize our conventional methods of teaching and adopt a new creative and efficient educational system that is compatible with the 21st century. The idea of Nawwar was fully conceived with the help of Hady Aymen , also an engineering student at the GUC, animator, graphics designer and musician . Our talents qualified us to develop the idea and put it into action. Nawwars team started to grow increasingly until we became about 50 motivated members who strongly believe in the idea.
