Adjustment of Diverse Cultures
Explain your project in details:
My aim is to build a cultural center for the refugees in the hosted country. The main aim of this center is to build and promote peace among the refugees and the citizens of the hosted country; and also to give an opportunity for the refugees to boost their skills, which may lead them to choose their field of studies and careers. In order to do this, this cultural center will create an interaction space among the refugees in the camp and outsiders in order to communicate and get familiar with each others cultural practices, languages, and interests. In other words, a variety of cultural orientation, talks, and trainings will be arranged for the refugees. For instance, three or four months ahead, the refugees will be informed to use their creativity and create an artwork, a craft, food or anything that can represent their cultural practices. The cultural orientation event will be open to everyone including the outsides and citizens of the hosted country. While promoting the correct information about ones cultural practices, this event helps reducing the numbers of misunderstandings that many people have regarding each others cultures. Similarly, there will be talks, workshops and trainings on different issues related to humanity and peace; professors as well as experts from different universities and organizations are invited to attend and cooperate. These events help promoting peace, correct cultural related information, and mutual understandings between refugees and outsiders. The events also help refugees to spend less time feeling a complete outsider in another country and thinking about their problems, which leaded them to be refugees. These thoughts mostly lead refugees especially the young generation to either get addicted to drugs or commit suicide, which is unfortunate and I definitely do not want this to happen to anyone.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
If we look at the history of the world, since the very old ages, people used to migrate from one place to another. I said this, because if not us, then our parents, and if not them, then our grandparents or ancestors moved from another place to the country, where we claim as our own country and where we believe that we belong to. Migration has happened and continues to happen. No one can stop it, simply because many countries are/will be destroyed because of the war; whereas many others are/will be destroyed by the climate change. As a result, people of these countries have no choice other than move to another country in order to live their lives. For this, we definitely need to come up with a solid plan of promoting peace and avoiding any types of conflicts, which may lead to war. From peace, of course I meant, acceptance of each other, humanity, caring and passionate towards each other. I am quite aware of multi dimensionality of my idea, which is quite positive. In other words, creating a cultural center for the refugees is multi-dimensional, and has variety of positive impacts. Some of these impacts include promoting peace, helping refugees to adjust with the new culture, environment and language as well as helping them to cope with their past problems (i.e. life threatening, family or political issues that caused them to ran away from their country) and start a new life in the new country. This cultural center also provides opportunities for refugees, who are mostly young, to explore and boost what they are quite passionate about, which in the long term consider as a great help for the development and the economic growth of the country.
Sustainability and future plans
As soon as, I establish this cultural center, for the first few months, the budget for the events needs to be provided by the donors. Once, the first events are arranged, for the rest, there are going to be fund raising events and in there, refugees will be asked to use their creativity and skills to make different artworks and stuffs or use different creative methods to raise funds. Based on the raised fund and some donors, the organization will be set and working out. If this cultural center and its aim go ahead successfully, then my next step is creating different branches in different countries, where accept refugees.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am Fatema, 24 years old from Afghanistan. I got my bachelor degree in Fine Arts and currently I am working as a media researcher as well as an assistant for Work for Better Bangladesh Organization. While I am a self-taught artist, I am good at doing research regarding culture, art, philosophy and society; I also enjoy helping people by talking and listening to them. In fact, I grow up as a refugee in Iran and later moved to Afghanistan; I travelled to Bangladesh for my studies and went to India for vacation. As a refugee myself, I have always thought of different reasons, which separate a group of people from others by consider them as refugees. I have always seen and experienced the amount of struggles including the lack of confidence to interact with people of the hosted country, lack of understandings about other refugees and citizens of the hosted countrys culture and language, and also the lack of space as well as opportunities to explore their skills and talents. These all leaded me to think and come up with a variety of solutions. One of these solutions is to create opportunities for the refugees and decrease the amount of struggles they are going through by creating an interaction space among the refugees in the camp and the outsiders, who are the citizens of the hosted country.
