Explain your project in details:
Recent studies show that 1.3 billion tons of solid waste per year has been generated from global cities with an annual cost of $205.4 billion (Hoornweg, 2012). This large amount of solid waste generation has become one of the serious challenges for environment and public health; particularly it is more serious in developing countries, like Ethiopia. The main reasons are, lack of awareness, commitment, facility, technology and finance. Inaddition, in Sub-Saharan Africa, availability, quality and cost of poultry feed remain to be the major challenge to the expansion of poultry industry attributed to the continuous increment of the price of the conventional poultry feed resources. It is clearly indicated that the expansion of poultry industry depends largely on availability of good quality feed in sufficient quantities at affordable market price. Therefore, the availability of high-quality and low-cost feed is a crucial prerequisite for poultry production. Moreover, organic fertilizer are very important to the fertility of the soil. The castings contain high amounts of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. Castings contain: 5 times the available nitrogen, 7 times the available potash, and 1 ½ times more calcium than found in good topsoil. Therfore, all this needs suitable technology, so vermicomposting is the most appropriate technology and Ethiopia is not exception to this all situation. The objectives of this project are production of organic fertilizer, easily available poultry feed and waste free environment using vermicomposting technology. The project can be the first in the form of this because it is new not only Ethiopia but also Africa and most of the society have no awareness about the importance of poultry feed, waste and organic fertilizers from it
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
This project is so different and so original that it includes feedstuffs which are partly unfamiliar to the industry of poultry feed and feeding before, both nationally and globally. The other thing which adds to the uniqueness of this project or the impact of this project is that it is very relevant to the current demands of poultry production all over the country. The cost of poultry products is sky rocketing, and the price of eggs, for example, has unprecedentedly reached near four Ethiopian birr. The reason for this being the 60-70% of cost of production goes to feeding, and protein is the most expensive of all nutrients. The worms can replace most of protein sources of chicken, and therefore, will help reduce the cost substantially. This project also responds to the problems of competing use of feed resources between humans and chickens as well, and also takes environmental concerns into consideration. As mentioned briefly above, soybean is being used as protein source both for humans and chickens. The use of the worm as a source of protein, instead of the expensive soybean, reduces the cost of production significantly, and would obviate the need for soybean as protein source. This, therefore, is also a tool for managing waste products. Turning a by-product, once considered environmental hazard, into animal feed is the golden solution both for the environmentalists, ecologist and nutritionists, as it is cheap and sound method. Whats so unique to this project is that the worm can be used as both feed to the chicken and produce organic fertilizer to the plant being grown for protein source. In general, the success of the project measure under farmers facing poultry feed shortage, high cost of inorganic fertilizer and its negative effect and African cities faced a lot of solid wastes.
Sustainability and future plans
Once implemented (with my finance capacity in small amount), this project attracts a lucrative business. To begin the big wave of business opportunity, promote our products to the farmers both land owners and landless so that they will be initiated to produce poultry feed, organic fertilizer and to benefit from it either by selling it to chicken producers or by directly feeding it to their chicken. I will also give samples for free to interested groups for promotion, and later on, I will sell it upon request. In general, my products are very cheap and easy to produce from locally available resources. The products being environmentally friendly make no harm to people and environment so that they will be acceptable and easily create business. The prospective customers of this business are of different kind. Farmers engaged in farming and chicken rearing are the potential customers of these products. Small scale and large scale chicken producers are also the other customers this business is intending to attract. In addition, higher companies who have a lot of solid wastes and others for the future will be considered as potential customers. I will scale up the project depending on the success story learned from our first customers. I will use their success story to convince other potential customers to mass produces and to distribute the products to larger communities. And, then, the business will take care of itself reaches this level.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
My name is mebratu yigzaw. I have a Bsc degree in animal science in Debre Markos University and now a graduate student in Jimma University. As I have describe above, I was left my time with farmers and my friends during my break in order to do community service. Then done different activities with agricultural experts, city sanitation workers and farmers. But, always I am just thinking how to use this waste for useable forma and how to help farmers using this waste. Finally, just I am talk to my friends and all farmers and experts and they were agreed by my idea.
