Mili Dueli - Online Balkan poetry contest
Explain your project in details:
It was a big decision, but I founded the first online poetry contest on the Balkans, called Sweet Duels. Instead of comments of hatred on social networks, I started a competition, which prolongs words of peace in verses. Six years later, we have grown to a group with over one thousand Balkan poets. It becomes very popular here and every year, I proudly organize it, because there are more and more poets, who want to join us. We already have one common collection of poems and we sell the book here. In this sixth season, I receive 384 applications for participating in Sweet Duels from seventeen countries around the world. In this sixth season, I have received 384 participation applications in Sweet Duels from seventeen countries around the world. The contest has been existing for six seasons and over that time, it represented the work of almost 1000 of poets from more than 30 countries in the world. A lot of poets are with Balkan origins because, firstly, it is organized for them, but every year there are a lot foreign authors who are all over the world. The structure of the contest is the following: the organizer publishes poems on the social network and then the jury and the readers vote. It has five rounds and in every round, after the results have been published, someone finishes his participation in the contest. In the final the award for the winner is a Sweet Duels’ statue and a plaque. Participation in this contest is FREE and there are no other restrictions.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
This project has a big impact to our community. A lot of poets from different countries, which were war opponents, became friends. Now they visit each other and spend time together. For example, the winner of the first season of Sweet Duels - Dijana Uherek Stevanović - is a Serbian poetess from Subotica, who met in the final of this contest Svjetlana Tvrtković Režek, a Croatian poetess. They became very close friends. Now Dijana often goes to Croatia to spend her holidays with her family there. Just to recap, two and a half decades ago, Croatia and Serbia were war enemies. This project also has a big impact on young people, who participate in the project as poets or just readers. Both have the opportunity to see that promotion of peace through verses is really a big step for more tolerance, which we need here. There are thousands and thousands of pages and profiles on social networks which discuss the war even if it is over. This project is an opportunity to put this aside.
Sustainability and future plans
As an organizer of this project, everything is based on my ideas. I made it to be independent. In the future, I am planning to import a participation fee, but at first I want to attract more visitors and poets and to make it more popular. Nowadays, we are the most popular online poetry contest on the Balkans, so we have all preconditions to import a participation fee in the next seasons. The mayor of the municipality, Mr. Edin Hozan, has contributed the project to organize a promotion of our first collection of poems in the city of Jajce. There wasn’t a participation fee for authors of our collection, so we financed it by ourselves. In the last season awards were financed by sponsors from my country, Bosnia and Herzegovina. For this season, I financed all awards by my scholarship's savings. Showing the opportunities of our project, I hope that it will find sponsors.
