Youth Corps of Malawi
Explain your project in details:
The main objective of this project is to assist underprivileged secondary students who have the potential of becoming great leaders with financial resources for their studies. The activities will include identifying the needy students through the Ministry of Education, teachers at different schools, mentoring and counseling, monitoring and evaluation of the project using terminal records, one-on-one interactions with the students. We will also get involved in proposal writing to request funds from possible donors and partnering with like-minded individuals and organizations that may help us reach great heights in our cause.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
The enterprise will have an impact on equal access to education for students regardless of circumstances they might be in. Achievements will be measured by the number of students who successfully complete high (secondary) school, despite undesirable circumstances they might be in. Achievements will also be measured by the number of students who change their negative attitude towards life after being mentored and counselled. Also by the positive results in terminal tests.
Sustainability and future plans
Currently the cause is funded mainly by the founder and well-wishers. To ensure the sustainability of the cause, we are now engaged in production of local chickens as a means of generating the so much needed funds to scale the project up. Will engage some volunteers who have a calling to humanitarian services to carry some duties such as monitoring and evaluation. Youth Corps of Malawi plans to partner with other organizations, such that if we are short on funds, our students will be referred to such. We intend to extend our venture to tertiary education especially in public schools where funds for loans are usually limited. Our priority will be for students who graduate from high school under Youth Corps of Malawi initiative.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am 34 years old. I am a go-getter, who never let unfavorable circumstances around me dictate what becomes of me. Growing up with my siblings was not usually a walk in the park, but I never let that be an obstacle to achieving my dreams. Whenever I come across an opportunity I try to grab it for I know it may never come my way a second time. I joined teaching service after my undergraduate study in Forestry. During my teaching service is when I came across students who have the potential of becoming great leaders but they lacked finances to fund their studies. I helped them wherever I could afford. Would like to inspire more students to look beyond their circumstances and excel in life, thus intend to extend the initiative to other areas in Malawi other than my local community. I was awarded Young African Leaders Initiative fellowship, 2016 for my contribution towards civic leadership in my community. Currently hold a master's degree in soil science, and run a variety of businesses, ranging from clothing to consumables.
