Online Learning Portal-ShuleBase
Explain your project in details:
Over the last two decades, the government of Tanzania has been implementing quantitative reforms in education directed towards increasing access to education through increased enrolment and building of secondary schools. More and more secondary schools have been built in different Wards across the country. Despite the increased enrolment, the quality of education is compromised due to lack of quality learning materials, low teacher-students learning interactions in classrooms due to large number of students and lack of books. This has resulted in poor students performance in both public and private schools. Therefore, the ShuleBase aims to cover that gap by connecting students and teachers by providing learning resources online wherever and whenever they are in different formats including Audio, Video and PDF documents so that they have equal and equitable access to these materials. The main objective of the project is to establish an online learning portal which offers access to quality and equitable educational learning materials for students. Specific objectives includes Enabling students create and do their remedial learning online, download and access learning materials in terms of audio, video and PDF documents, To enable students post questions and get instant feedback from online instructors and students, to enable students do their test and exams online. Project activities includes the development of the users registration, system configurations module, chatting module, material module (audio, video and PDF file formats), self-test and exams module and payment module. Innovative approaches includes but not limited to Need assessment where I assess the need for a particular service and then analysis and design of the need. Then it is followed by implementation and testing and then module deployment. Also I use users feedback and experience to enhance the project to exactly suite what the users need.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Impact Once the project is fully developed, it will increase students performance because some students fail or get poor academic results due to lack of access to quality materials prepared in detail and different formats which are easy for students to understand and which are available right through their mobile devices especially in rural areas. Once the students are well educated, they can bring about development in their community and the nation at large. Achievement One of the greatest achievement of the project is be able to connect students from different schools and regions who can share their knowledge from one another. Measures to evaluate success includes the following i. time frame to finish the development of the project and in this case I have tried to complete my project modules according to the schedule ii. I also measure the success of project in terms of quality and cost. In this case I have tried to develop each module to ensure that I give out a product which is useful to the target group. I also measure in terms of cost per module. Since I am developing the project on my own, there is little to incur to the project such as some hardware configurations and thus the project is within the set budget. iii. I also measure the success of the project in terms of the stakeholders which in this case are the students. I have a users feedback module which receives user comments and feedbacks about their experience with the project and through these comments I work on them to make enhancements to improve the project.
Sustainability and future plans
The portal is designed to allow users (students) create account by signing up. Once the user has setup an account he/she gains access to the portal service. The portal services are divided into two main categories, free service and premium service. Free services are available to any student with an account and who can log into the portal. This includes chatting, comments and replies. Also creation and participation in online discussion groups. All these are free of charge. Premium services are the paid services for which the user has to pay for those services. These services include downloading of materials which are already published in terms of Video, Audio and PDF. We have set a monthly subscription where users make payment via mobile payments (mobile transactions) using his/her cellphone and is granted access to download materials for 30 days and after subscription period expires the access is denied until the user makes payment to activate the service for the next 30 days. The project idea uses the market opportunity of growing number of mobile phones users countrywide and internet connectivity through smart phones countrywide; especially the youth in schools and colleges who need the most of the learning opportunities. ShuleBase is determined to tap this opportunity and bridge this gap by providing access to affordable learning opportunities at affordable cost. Project finance comes from my other sources and also from one stakeholder who have agreed to assist me with the project development. The next phases of the project is to add more modules to the portal including incorporating primary schools, diploma students, degree students and post graduate studies. The plan is make the portal a center and fully fledged learning portal for academic purposes. With this approach, the project is expected to grow and become the giant learning portal.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
My name is Alexander Mashamba, a 29 years old Tanzanian. I have a bachelors degree with honors in Information Systems(BSc IS) from the university of Dodoma, the capital city of the United Republic of Tanzania. I have worked at different ICT consulting firms as the Computer Programmer for the past few years and since 2015 I have been working with the government of Tanzania at the Business Registrations and licensing agency (BRELA) which is under the Ministry of Industries, Trade and Investment as the Computer Programmer. I have been motivated to create the learning portal after seeing how students especially from remote or rural area facing the challenge of enough teachers to teach them, low student-teacher interactions and lacking enough and quality materials and came out with this project to bring learning resources closer to the students through their mobile devices My project focuses entirely on creating a very possible way of enabling students to interact with each other my creating online groups and chatting modules with capability to download materials to their devices for offline uses. Also the portal will deliver learning contents at a very cheaper price which every student can afford.
