Every child on board
Explain your project in details:
I started with creating awareness via videos on social media but later decided to gather young women and men with like passion to change our community for the better. I got people from both the public and private sector to sell my idea of getting the street children back to school. My main objective is to build a strong backbone, formal and strong foundation for my village folks. I want to empower them through education. We first have written letters to our partners for help in terms of permissions and logistics. Surveys have been carried out in our various schools to know the rate of drop outs. We have met severely to discuss our way forward. We also joined in the campaign during women's day celebration celebration. There are place and times we've spotted children drinking alcohol, sleeping on the street, wasting time at bus terminals as lat at 1am. There are others who follow fraudsters around to be trained to get fast money. We are collaborating with the police to secure permission to go and interview these kids and for them to "scare" them off the street and beer bars at odd times, the social welfare to accommodate children that will be caught by the police at odd times, the judiciary to prosecute according to the constitution of the land, parents who do not control their wards, the municipal assembly to assist with providing furniture enough to accommodate those children that will be added to the schools, the educational directorate to help with statistics and more teachers. The national service scheme is to provide human resource to train those who will like to learn craft (beads, basketry or sewing). Parents and teachers are to ensure the kids stay in school with any approach whatsoever possible.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Education, whether formal or informal goes a long way to have an impact on the individual, community, country and the world at large. Many are the people who would really wanna do something to help build the community but doesn't know how. Bringing them together has been great for them and an opportunity for them to help. The project seeks to put these children back to school for a good course. As it stands, illiteracy is high in my community and that impedes progress. The community sees education as a waste of time but its the goal and objective of this project to change that mindset. We are currently collaborating with the National Service Scheme to organize vacation classes for junior high school final year pupils who will be writing their certificate examination in June. At the launch of the group, dignitaries, successful entrepreneurs, musicians and actors will be invited to share their success stories of education. Tackling drop outs issues and supporting parents/guardians, donation of stationery will be made in September to schools in my community. After before the end of the term this project will be initiated, the team will go back to the street, schools and home to check the dropout rates, teenage pregnancies and control of parents on their wards. The figures will be compared to those originally gotten before the commencement of the project and we would expect to see high enrolment, low street children, punctuality of the pupils and academic excellence. Those in the informal sectors (crafts) will equally be checked for improvement and progress.
Sustainability and future plans
We have available members and a team of volunteers from the our local communities to help us with the survey so that no child on the street is missed out. We intend to carry out the project during school hours to ensure we have mostly children who are out of school. My organization NSESA Africa have membership dues and levies for projects and we have the available finance for the pilot project to be done within the Assin Central Constituency. It is our wish that, this project will be implemented in several other communities and if the means permits us, throughout Ghana and other African countries where we have registered members. The project model is simple, easy to fund and yet its impact is unending. We also hope in the near future to partner with other like-minded non-profit organizations, parents and schools to implement this project.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am Vera Adom Bio, a professional teacher and 34 years of age. I currently hold a bachelor degree in Basic Education. I've been teaching for the past ten years. I am very daring, passionate and a team player. I am result oriented and a go getter. I have taken some courses on emotional intelligence and confidence from Charlie Academy of Excellence. I am motivated by the fact that, many children are left on their on own to fend for themselves which put them in danger. These children wander about on the street and become nuisance for the community. With education as one of our main tools for change, we will achieve our goal and aim.
