Poultry Farming (Kuroiler)
Explain your project in details:
The main objective of this project is to reduce the unemployment, hunger and povery of the marginalized youths and women of Kisarawe District through including them in poultry farming. The specific objectives are to support the establishment and strengthening of marginalized youths and womens groups of poultry farmers; and linking the established marginalized youths and womens groups of poultry farmers to the market. Initially we started with the construction of our own local made incubator and hatchery. Then 6 acres of land which is located in Kisarawe District was purchased as our poultry farming area. In a time frame of one year we were able to rise a total of 50,000 chickens. Up to date the project has employ a total of 10 skilled and 20 unskilled labour. Current the project is under expansion processes whereby the addition of poultry units, purchasing of new and modern incubator, establishment of chicken feeds processing machine, and establishment of mini slaughtering and packaging industry are the key expansion areas which the project plan to start with. Initially we have manage to purchase a new and modern incubator which has the capacity of carrying a total of 5000 eggs. In order to ensure income and employment availability, the project shall be involving youths and women in poultry farming whereby in a period of one year of project expansion, a total of 23 and 38 groups of youth and women respectively surrounding the project area shall be reached through the use of contract farming system. Through the use of this system, the groups be will be supported with the construction of poultry units, distribution of chicken chicks, chicken food and vaccinations. After five months the final product (chicken) will be sold to our slaughtering and packaging industry of chicken meat.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Up to date the project has employ a total of 10 skilled and 20 unskilled labour who are living surrounding the project area. But after the expansion process, the project is expecting to employ large number of skilled and unskilled labour (approximately 100 skilled labour and 300 unskilled labour). Also under contrary basis of providing chicken chicks, drugs and vaccination, and free trainings of poultry farming, large number of youths and women will be reached and engaged in poultry farming (approximately more than 500 youths and 760 women in a period of five years of project implementation). Therefore, this will lead to the improvement of the level of living conditions among the targeted groups (youth and women). Also the project will add the availability of food which are healthy to human being. This is due to the fact that, eating natural chickens and natural eggs is more heathier than the broiler chickens and its eggs which is very artificial. Moreover, part of the gained profit from the project will be used to support the construction and renovation of schools, hospitals, and other related social problems. Before the staring of this project simple baseline survey was conducted which helps us to measure the occurred project impacts. Due to expansion process we have also develop a matrix framework which will help not only in Monitoring and Evaluation processes but also in measuring of the project impact
Sustainability and future plans
In order to ensure project sustainability, the Company is in a process of producing its own fertile eggs for the purpose of ensuring maximum production of quality chicken chicks and chickens. Also the company is in the final stages of entering into partnership with the TANZANIA POULTRY BREEDERS ASSOCIATION. This partnership will help to ensure the provision of continuous trainings and necessary technical assistances on poultry farming both at Company and groups (youths and women poultry farmers) levels. Hence sustainable production of quality poultry products will be assured. Moreover, the gained profits by the Company and the formulated groups of youths and women poultry farmers shall be used for re-investing in their poultry production. This will help to maximize the scale of production in sustainable way. Additionally, through contract poultry farming model, we are planning to reach number of the youths and women from different parts of Tanzania. This also will help to ensure sustainable production of poultry products. Lastly, the Companys Monitoring & Evaluation officers shall be having regular visits to poultry farms of youths and women. Due to higher demand of quality white meat and eggs at national and international level, we are looking forward to establish huge slaughtering and packaging industry of chicken meat of Kuroiler's specie (Approximately slaughter 30,000 chicken and more per day), the packaging industry of chicken eggs (Approximate 50,000 eggs and more per day), and the processing industry of quality chicken feed (Approximately 30,000 tones and more per day) for the feeding of our poultry farm and number of poultry farms of youths and women which will be established. In order to accomplish these targets we will look for financial support (Both loan and Grant) from different institutions. For the time being, Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) is our first target.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
My name is Gilbert Daniel with the age of 29 years old. I completed Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management from the University of Dar es Salaam in 2016. In March 2016 I championed the establishment of Village Community Banks (VICOBA) whereby a total of 350 groups of youths and women were formed under the support of the National Economic Empowerment Council. Up to date am still a mentor of these groups which runs different entrepreneurship programs including soap making. Also in 2017 I wrote and won youth grant project from the Foundation for Civil Society. After the implementation of this project am happy to see the improvement of youths' lives surrounding the project area because some of them has open their own small businesses and majority of them are fully participating in decision making concerning their social, political, and economic needs and priorities at the District, Ward and sub ward level. Currently am taking number of entrepreneurship courses which I will expose and impact to number of my fellow youths and community at large. In addition, I have leadership certificate award which I got during the completion of advance secondary school.
