Primary Education Improvement in Nigeria: Accessibility and Quality
Explain your project in details:
Tagfour Foundations (TFI) objectives are Education and Orphanage support. Education objective is focused on primary & secondary school education. TFI's activities involves ensuring that all kids have access to primary and secondary school & improvement in the quality of education i.e. school environments are conducive for learning, adequate infrastructures for effective & efficient learning etc. On this project mentioned in the summary above, TFI identified in a rural town a list of primary schools that are in dying need of help. The schools are not conducive for learning i.e. no toilets, no school furniture, school buildings are in very bad shape and the list is endless. Under this project we intend to renovate these schools, which represents a first tranche of schools identified. We have started with full renovation of one of the schools and this is expected to be completed in two months. Within this renovation we would also create a library in the school and request used/new books from the public to donate to put in the library. TFIs plan is to apply for project sponsorship from Organizations. The sponsorship can be full or partial sponsorship. A full sponsor would be responsible for the project from start to finish in terms of resources and monitoring. It is an option for a sponsor to seek the help of TFI for project monitoring, in an instance where the sponsor does not have a physical presence in Nigeria. A partial sponsor would be responsible for certain items related to a project i.e providing furniture, painting of the school, providing books for the library etc.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Tagfour Foundation as part of its objectives is to empower the future generation and increase their ability to have a good life now and in the future. Education is a basic human right and have been identified by TFI as its main tool towards achieving sustainable development. Per UNICEF "40% of Nigerian children aged 6-11 do not attend any primary school". With children under 15 years of age accounting for about 45% of the countrys population, this is unsustainable and unsafe for any country and Nigeria being a developing country at that. You find rich kids paying school fees in millions of Naira and at the extreme you have kids that do not go to school because their parents cannot afford to pay school fees of a few thousand Naira. The statistics does not look good and we cant keep at waiting and expecting a change without starting to create the change in little folds. TFI wants to eliminate these unpleasant statistics. We identified education as being the best and most efficient way of achieving this. Our focus is on basic education because this is the most vulnerable stage in ones life. TFI supports the sustainable development goals (SGDs) and will run projects to help achieve the SDGs- In particular 1, 2 & 4. TFI commenced operations March 2017 & from that time we have successfully built a toilet for a primary school, organized mentorship program in a secondary school, given scholarship to five best students in same secondary school, got an education sponsor for an orphan child. Currently we are fully renovating a primary school (windows, doors, flooring, ceilings & walls, desk and chair, etc.) & creating a library in the school. Education is a very important tool to achieve sustainable development and TFI is joining efforts to achieving this
Sustainability and future plans
The structure of TFI is that of an intermediary function primarily by bringing together those in need & those that have resources to help. TFIs primary objective is to see that children in Nigeria especially those in the rural areas are not neglected i.e. they are entitled to basic human rights which to them is a luxury. Our structure does not require a physical office which would be more expensive to manage i.e. rent, utility and monthly expenditures. There is a Coordinator in Nigeria running the Foundation as a part time job and this is the only recurring expenses we run as of now. Other expenses are project based and projects commence only when there is enough resources to start and complete the project or there is a sponsor for that project. The other objective of TFI is Orphanage support and the structure of this is that people decide to support orphanage homes with toiletries, cash and any other needs. Our primary source of funding is donation. As we grow, we plan to get Organizations to partially or fully fund projects identified by TFI. TFI would go to the rural areas to identify schools, orphanage homes that are in dying need of support and we make these needs public and seek for supporters. The sponsor (either individual or Organization) can provide the needs directly to the school/orphanage or through TFI i.e. monitoring of projects, funding of non-specific project etc. We intend to increase awareness of these needs by projecting them more on social media for sponsors, apply for funding on behalf of the schools, get more volunteers to join in our effort and bringing in ideas. More schools & orphanages within scope will be identified and public awareness created for their needs.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am Feyikemi, 33 years and a Finance & Tax expert. I started TFI out of my passion to see people live out their full potentials and be happy. Prior to starting TFI, I had personally helped children and orphanage homes within my capacity and got volunteers/additional help within my network of friends. I was motivated to start TFI after being exposed to the rate of uneducated kids out there and the amount of help needed. These kids are mostly in the rural areas where they have less or no visibility. TFI's intention is to bring together resources/efforts by individuals & organisations who by themselves would not have known about these needs. I am passionate, consistent and have integrity and these attributes contribute to the success of TFI. TFI have been recognized by Home of Gods Grace Orphanage, First Gods Love Nursery & Primary School, Ansarudeen Secondary School etc. for its support over the years.
