Sekaja Sports Academy (SSA)
Explain your idea in details:
Looking at our country, there is an alarming low rate of industrialization and a high rate of unemployment. Lesotho government cannot absorb the youths, middle-aged citizens and older people in the employment sectors. However, it has come to my notice that there is an untapped globally rich economy that is generated through sports. Lesotho has a potential to export athletes to other countries in multiple sport-code. Just a simple example, soccer players are the highest paid individuals in the world. 1 Lionel Messi from Barcelona earns a total of 130 million (£112m/£145m).This implies that, if our country can produce best athletes, it can benefit from exporting such a talent. In order to perfectly produce quality players, I have thought and found out that, we must exert tireless effort to molding youths' talent in sports at the young age. Sports should be regarded as one of the golden lifetime opportunity that youth must work on, with a very dedicated plan and perfect execution done by SSA skilled mentors (trainers) from within and outside our country Lesotho.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We want to operate in all ten districts of Lesotho, so that no one is left behind. Sports are still so far considered as extra-mural activities and we want them to be a primary income generating activity for some people. So success for us will be when we are able to host a tournament for instance in Basket ball or volley ball and each district has a team representing. Another success factor is when the government and other organizations start buying into these sporting codes not just soccer and each and every player in the league is able to earn something from their participation. We also are not confined to just the players, there will be referees, other officials and trainers. The teams also stand a chance to win prize money upon winning tournaments, which will contribute towards the team fund and better remuneration for their players.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
1. I have organized a team of three software engineers who are working on the prototype system that is going to manage all these sports activities and training in real-time from the comfort of trainers' and players' homes. The system performs the following functionalities: (a) Registers everyone who wishes to train youths in every sport code a person desires. These trainers will develop the following skills to our youths, technique, game intelligence, physical fitness and proper mindset. (b) On registration, the trainers will be expected to pay a charge of R50 monthly as a form of funds raising for SSA. (c) SSA players (youths) will be expected to pay R70 weekly as part of the cash that will reward trainers at the end of the month and procure certain training equipment and internet resources for SSA. (d) The system will also upload the training lessons which will be accessed by youths from the comfort of their homes and their local field grounds, where they can conveniently train and practice all the lessons they access from the system daily. (e) At the end of every month, all the trainers will be paid cash in Mpesa corresponding to the number of youths they attended for that month. (f) The system will also monitor on real-time, the activities performed by the youths when they are tipped and mentored by remote trainers. By this feature, I will ensure that all the youths get impactful training from all skilled trainers. (g) The other module or a feature that the system will have is the Chat service, which allows all youths and coaches/trainers to share ideas, in order to improve their work and performance.
I am a 30 year old female educator who is passionate about youth development. I have been teaching business studies, computer and tourism for 6 years. In these years I have coached a nearby high school in debate and they have improved to competing in regional and national competitions. I also have been co coaching another school in basketball. My motivation in life is to mobilize youth to start businesses, to utilize their talents and make something of themselves. Our government is under pressure to provide jobs and solve many other problems in our country and therefore progress is slow, hence its better when we take initiatives and help improve the economy of the country. Most of my students upon leaving, establish businesses due to the businesses we run on campus. I also teach them how to draw up business plans, proposals and how to market their products. I was among the 30 finalists in African Entrepreneurship Award 2018 edition.
