Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Explain your idea in details:
This project involves the creation of a company for hygienic manual emptying and transformation of faecal sludge into agricultural fertilizer. Indeed, in Brazzaville the excreta are mainly collected in latrines. These traditional latrines are the type of toilet most used by Brazzaville households 57% (Mairie 2011). They store feces that are transformed over time into a product called fecal sludge, which must be evacuated regularly to avoid the health risk. Given the exorbitant cost and the inaccessibility in certain districts of the mechanical emptying, the majority of the population turned to manual emptying: An operation with high health risk (oro-fecal diseases) and environmental (air pollution) , some water). This manual emptying consists of "manually" emptying the latrine pit, leaving open defecation in the open air. The operation lasts an average of 1 hour and is practiced by about 70% of the population. Thus, to solve these problems, we hygienize the manual emptying using the gulper and reuse these sludge for agricultural purposes. This project has for main objectives Establish a sustainable sanitation system (Efficient, Hygienic, Affordable, Ecological and Sustainable) for the management and recovery of sludge from latrines in the city of Brazzaville Reduce inequalities Create more than 50 decent jobs To set up a circular economy Our activities are a system involving hygienic manual emptying with the Gulper's contribution to the extraction of sludge, the pre-collection through barrels, the transport to the treatment center by tricyclics for the production of agricultural fertilizer . My solution is relevant and innovative especially since it improves the practice of manual emptying which presents health and environmental risks by bringing the Gulper and then rid the population of the fecal matter by means of the futs and also the fact that she organizes this activity which was informal.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This project targets: End outdoor fecal deposition in plots and alleyways to protect the population from fecal-oral diseases Protect sustainable from the environment (air, water table and living environment) by avoiding the infiltration of feces into the aquifers Reduce inequalities by enabling people living on low incomes to access adequate sanitation and hygiene services Eradicate poverty by creating more than 50 decent jobs To fight against the pollution of water and the air by evacuating through the barrels the fecal sludge coming from the latrine pits Provide agricultural fertilizer to reduce fertilizer costs, resulting in increased farmer savings and responsible reuse This project will be evaluated by consulting the hospital registers concerning the rate of people suffering from oro-fecal diseases
Plans for implementation and sustainability
This project is financially viable especially since Brazzaville has more than 225,000 households and among the 203 households surveyed, 48 households have already emptied their pits; 55% manual drain and 12% mechanical drain. Among the manual emptying, 3% of respondents say that these are done by family members, 94% of respondents say that this operation is done by paid people; 3% of respondents did not comment. Of these 48 respondents who have already flushed, 70% have used manual emptying and 30% mechanical emptying This project will generate revenue through these three (03) aspects: 70% of households for hygienic manual emptying, 60% of farmers for fertilizer Regarding farmers, we gathered information from the central city hall and the Ministry of Agriculture
This project was initiated following my training on the systemic analysis of sustainability (Sustainable Development) and especially after knowing the rate of people suffering from fecal-oral diseases at the national level and the consequences of archaic manual emptying. groundwater and air. I am the best person for the success of this company, because of my skills in sustainable development and urban planning. This project won the "Startup Congo 2018" prize in June 2018.
