Dropout Checkpoint (DC Model)

Project Goal;To strengthen dropout prevention and increase opportunities for primary school completion in Universal Primary Education schools in Kaliro district, eastern Uganda.Project objectives:1.To establish a dropout early warning systems for early identification and monitoring pupils at-risk of dropping out of school in Universal Primary Education schools by 2021.2.To equip 24 teachers and administrators at 2 primary school with knowledge and skills to identify and support pupils at risk by 2021. 3.To strengthen community-parental-school partnership and engagement in promoting education and preventing school dropout in Universal Primary Education schools in Kaliro district by 2021.4.To examine the effectiveness of the Dropout Checkpoint Model in preventing school dropout in Universal Primary Education schools by 2021. Activities i) Training of DC Model facilitators ii) Disseminating of DC Model scorecard to identify high risk students ii) Conducting DC model Action meeting with stakeholders iii) Implementation of first track DC Model informed interventions iv) Conducting routine monitoring of at-risk students, data collection and reporting v) Re-dissemination of DC model scorecard Innovative Approaches i) Strengthening of partnership between key stakeholders i.e. parents, pupils, teachers, and district education and community development offices ii) frexibility of the DC model score tools that can be used inform of manual tools, computer system or mobile app iii) Detecting and preventing the dropout before it happens
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The DC Model will improve the quality of education in Universal Primary Schools and also strengthen parents-community-school collaboration to end school dropout and improve education in Uganda. The proposed model will contribute to SDG4 target (4.1) that seek to ensure that by 2030, all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes through increased class attendance, improved academic performance, reduction of school dropout and increase of opportunities for primary school completion. Measures of Success % increase in primary school completion rate by identified and monitored students in the targeted schools # of at-risk students kept in school learning for a full academic year % reduction in dropout cases in targeted schools
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Implementation Approach; District level: A project steering committee comprised of the District Education and Community Development Officers, head teachers and Project Coordinator will be established to provide overall project coordination, support integration and adaptation of project best initiatives into the district education and community development programs. Sub-county level: Somesa Future will work with the Sub-county community development and education officers to support, register and refer parents groups to government programs. Community level: Parents of identified pupils at high-risk of dropping out due to financial problems will be organized to form community based education banks to pool resources to support their children's education needs and increase their household income. Through the groups, parents will be educated and empowered to support their children's education while and home, and play their roles in ending school dropout. School level; A Dropout Checkpoint system will be established in the school. Teachers will be trained as DC model facilitators who will conduct termly identification and routine monitoring of at-risk pupils. Monthly meetings will be held to share progress and challenges in supporting pupils identified at high risk of dropping out. Collaborators; The model will be implemented in collaboration with; District education and community development offices, the school, parents groups and community based IPs basing on the needs identified during the DC model scoring. Other sustainability advantage; The flexibility nature of the model system, i.e. can be implemented using hardcopy tools in areas where there is no internet, as a computer friendly system and an android app makes it possible to be utilized in rural and urban settings where dropout is persistent (in slums). The proposed idea project will seek grant assistance for its implementation. At the end, results will be handed over to the district education and community development offices, and targeted schools for continuity.
