Family Tree Initiative
Explain your idea in details:
Family Tree Initiative was developed purposely for environmental conservation while reducing poverty through sustainable tree planting. This was developed to combat challenges posed by increased population on the available lands which lead to encroachment of the forests. There are activities undertaken to realize these objectives, for instance, the initiative intends to launch it's own tree nursery as well as a communication centre for farmer training and mentorship. The tree nursery is the income generating activity, which will play an important part in poverty reduction. It is a source of employment to youth and women. The Idea is unique,it's approach is focused on the increase of trees on farm lands rather than the gazetted forest lands. It aims on sustainable tree planting, where by a farmer is required to plant trees annually according to land size,as per the initiative,a farmer owning an acre is expected to have planted a hundred trees at the end of ten years, the farmer is intended to plant ten trees each year, this periodic tree planting will not affect farming production. It is unique in that no land is small,it is unique in that periodic harvesting of wood products is guaranteed. It is innovative in that every farmer can do it,increase in tree cover is achieved .It is an innovative approach in that, instead of using armed forest officers to protect trees,as per this initiative,a farmer is trained, mentored and guided to plant trees on their farms, which make them guard the trees by involving every member of the family. If every farmer plants trees as per this initiative,SDG 13 on climate action will be achieved.Imagine ten neighbouring farmers, planting 10000 trees in ten years!!
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Family Tree Initiative is a social enterprise with major focus on environmental conservation, since it is not majorly oriented on profit making as core objective, its financial targets might not be very realistic at the start of the project but projected to gain financially when farmers join in and accept the project. The initiative is measurable in that the performance indicators are scientifically proven.an indicator such as number of registered farmers, number of seedlings donated or sold to farmers can be accounted for, surviving trees on farmers land can be counted, the youth or women employed on the farm can be validated among other indicators. The initiative intends to keep financial records as well as all non financial records for evaluation purposes. It will also mantain a bank account for easy auditing and accounting. The initiative intends to open up for any external audits and also be ready to remit all taxes required by the state law as well as being legal in all its operations. Family Tree Initiative is geared towards sustainable tree cover as well as farming, since trees are planted periodically, harvesting is also periodic because all trees will not be matured at all times,a farmer can start enjoying tree harvesting after ten years sustainably. It is easy to evaluate success especially by analyzing if there was increase or decrease on number of farmers,if there is increase or decrease on number of partners,if there is increase or decrease on profit margins or increase or decrease on number of staff. With these variables,Family Tree Initiative renders itself to auditing.
