Renovatio Integrated Farm
Explain your idea in details:
Research reveals that Nigeria has the largest market for fishery in Africa with annual national fish demand of 3.2 million MT but currently has a supply gap of about 2.1 million MT. This implies that in order to meet up with this demand, the current production rate should be doubled. So, Renovatio Integrated Farm seeks to fill this supply gap by growing fish and plants in a re-circulating system with the main objective of providing a highly productive ecosystem with multiple benefits corresponding to improved health, waste and climate action, poverty alleviation and most importantly malnutrition and food security as the yield is improved up to 10x the same amount of space on arable land without incurring extra cost on environmental undesirable substances such as herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. Initially, the farm will be sited in Enugu, South Eastern Nigeria, where dry season is quite prominent without easy access to the major source of fishes (water bodies). As part of our expansion plan, we target states in the northern Nigeria, and other African countries that are most affected by water scarcity and seasonal variations as we attract investors and foreign partners. Our product offerings will include catfish, Amaranths, fluted pumpkins, pepper, tomatoes, cucumber, water melon, among others, which will be made affordably available for households and food processing industries. We will have absolute control of the farm environment through greenhouse technology to produce fishes and different kinds of crops at all times of the year, even in the dry seasons when prices are quite high and farmers suffer from food insecurity. Moreover, we are aware of the energy requirement of this system, and have therefore planned to convert the excess waste generated to electricity (biofuels) using anaerobic digestion. Thus, enable us to run independent of the national energy grid.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We realized that people love eating healthy, chemical-free vegetables and animals because they not only prevent exposure to diseases but also boost their health, with other benefits directly or indirectly related to the 17 goals of the UNDP-SDGs. As a steady source of highly nutritious vegetables, fruits and fish, this business is not only financially beneficial but also highly altruistic as we aim at feeding hungry Nigerians in significant numbers and improve their quality of life economically, socially and otherwise. So, by extension, this business targets provision of solutions to challenges directly related to a good number of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with great interest in goal 2 (zero hunger; fight hunger, under and malnutrition). Renovatio also will have unmeasured impacts on the goal 1; apart from revenue generation for the company and corresponding raise in the countrys GDP through taxes, Renovatio Integrated Farm will absolve many Nigerians in the production, packaging and distribution of our products thus creating hundreds of employment opportunities for the unemployed youths in Nigeria and Africa by extension. Moreover, this company produces energy from its own waste, recirculating nutrients with anaerobic digestion and digestate biofertilizer while collaborating with other farmers, thus providing solutions to the challenges related to goal 7 & 9 (affordable and clean energy & industry, innovation and infrastructure). Finally, we want to help spread the word about aquaponics and empower the local population through trainings and workshops, demonstrations to farmers, regulatory agencies, schools, and the general public. We expect our operation to be a living laboratory and hope we can share what we learn with others in a way that lets aquaponics grow into something greater, creating greater awareness towards the sources of our products, their production processes and overall relationship with nature.
