TRANFORMING WASTE TO INCOME GENERATING PRODUCTS.
Explain your idea in details:
The main objectives of the idea are to create employment opportunities and reduce the amount of dumped waste in various cities, making the cities clean and sustainable thus reducing pollution. In the transformation process, we begin by collecting the waste matter to a central point, then sort the waste to either organic or inorganic waste matter. The sorted wastes are then recycled back to their original form then sold back to the respective companies for reuse or transformed into different forms or products that are then sold to the people and the tourists. In the organic sector, food wastes are transformed into fertilizers by the help of the microorganisms such as the red worms and black soldier flies, which are also food to the poultry, pigs and many more animals since they are rich in proteins.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
In the collection, sorting and recycling sectors will require labor force hence create employment to both the literate and the illiterate people in the society. Also in the collection sector, we will find that the street children will be much into it since it is their form of getting cash, so as they will be helping in the collection of the wastes, it will be an opportunity of reaching them and grant them education and other related aids like taking the drug-addicted ones to rehab and offering them the basic needs they require. Due to the high rate of unemployment in third world countries, most unemployed graduates will indulge in the sales of the products to the people around and to the tourist, which will enable them to get income and also generate revenue to the country hence improve the country's economy and employment opportunities to many unemployed graduates. The process will reduce the piles of dumpsites across various cities hence make them clean and sustainable by reducing the amount of pollution taking place in a given geographical area.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
My idea's business aspect is the sales of the sorted matter and the products. Financial aid is required in setting up the machines that will handle the inorganic waste matter such as the bottle crashing and plastic melting machines integrated to be one full continuous machine for easy handling of the wastes in stages. Also collaborating with the sales and marketing firms to help offer a better market for the products and also orphanages and schools that will be willing to accommodate the street children that will be able to reach us. The agricultural firms will also help supply the microorganisms that will facilitate decomposition of the food waste into fertilizers.
I'm a 22-year-old Fourth year pursuing Mechanical and Production Engineering at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. What motivated me to come up with this idea was the stench in some of our cities, for example, the slums named Kibera located at the capital city of the country, Nairobi, people live in poor conditions surrounded by heaps of waste which make them targets of contacting various diseases. Also, the rate of unemployment in the country is alarming, most graduates are jobless hence leading to crimes in various parts of the country. Lastly, is the increase of street children in our cities begging for cash from the citizens, is so touching. With my engineering skills and knowledge, as a solemn purpose of an engineer to find solutions to the problems around us, I decided to come up with this idea to curb the problems stated and make the world a better place.
