Candles from Bee Wax Program
Explain your idea in details:
Candles from Bee Wax Programs main objectives is to protect the environment by reducing spillage of honey wax which is a by-product of honey, promote renewable energy by making candles for lighting home from honey wax, to improve youth employment by empowering the youths with skills in bee keeping and candle making, and improving access to lighting energy to the rural masses by making candles which poor people are able to buy. Youths will be identified and organised in groups. They will be trained in bee keeping, honey management, and candle making. The honey produced by these youth groups will be packaged in different categories by the enterprise and sold to both local people and the mega supermarkets in towns and cities. The honey wax from the honey will be used to make candles at one centre. The innovation is in the element of turning this honey wax into candles since this wax is just wasted and eventually causes damage to the environment in areas where there are serious bee keeping business. This will be the first time consumers will find candles made from honey wax well-packaged in major shops across Malawi. This program also cross-cuts into several objectives and strategic areas.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The program targets youths, both male and female, in rural areas. Trees in particular and forests/orchards in general provide a conducive environment for bee keeping. The project will discourage deforestation, promote reforestation and discourage cutting down of trees. This will ensure that the environment is protected in areas where the program will be carried out. The program will also promote clean environment by reducing waste from honey wax is thrown in water bodies and on ground. Related to this, people will not be using trees or grass to light their houses as these candles will be sold at a very affordable prices to the communities. This will promote clean energy, reduce waste disposal and increase access to clean and renewable energy to the communities and Malawi in general. The program will also increase youth employment and business skills by equipping them with skills. This will lead to reduction in high unemployment rate and increase number of businesses created by the youths and eventually reduce poverty in the communities selected. For a start, the program will create youth groups at Choma, Kavuzi, Malivenji and Kavuzi. These are rural areas surrounding the city of Mzuzu. This will also come along with health benefits from honey consumption. Honey has proved to have a number of medicinal use and it is already on high demand on both local and international markets. To evaluate the impact of the program, I will be looking at the number of groups formed and successfully trained, number of bee hives given to the youths in form of asset loans, amount of honey and honey wax produced, amount of candles produced and properly packaged, percentage of the honey and candles accepted by people by being bought in grocery stores and supermarkets.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The business will be supporting the youth groups with very soft asset loans in form of bee hives, protective materials used to harvest honey and other equipment needed in the bee keeping program. The trainings will be offered for free since the cost will be included as part of the loans. The loans will not have any interest attacked as beneficiaries will be required to pay back the principal amount loaned from us. The implementation plan is to have a network of youth beekeepers that will be empowered with skills and assets to produce honey and honey wax for the purposes of making candles. This business will be a social enterprise under the organization which I am running and leading. The organization is called Revolution Human Aid and Transparency Initiative (REHAAT-INITIATIVE). The candle making centre will be operated and managed by organization which will be producing and selling the candles. The idea of having the network of beekeepers is to build a strong base of supply of honey wax and honey. I plan to start financing the program with the little resources I have as an individual but with the nature of the project, it needs some external funding. The business will be in partnership with funders who might be part of the business depending on agreements. The business will be sustained by the profits from the sale of candles and resale of raw and processed honey bought from the youth beekeepers. Some people like honey in its raw form and these people will be accessing this honey from us. The remaining honey will be processed and packaged for
