Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Dry recycling of plastic packaging
Explain your idea in details:
How can we reduce the impact of plastic packaging on the waters of our planet ? We believe we need to recycle more and find ways to use less water in this process. For example, only in Brazil 800 million plastic lubricating oil packages, containing 1.5 million liters of residual oil are discarded annually. Since only 1 liter of oil can contaminate 1 million liters of water. With this in mind, we have developed a technological solution that performs the decontamination and recycling of these packages in an ecological way: without the use of water and without waste generation More than that, all residual oil is recovered and recycled, eliminating the environmental risk. As if that were not enough, the process generates a recycled plastic of excellent quality that allows the preparation of new oil plastic packages with a cost up to 10% lower, thus creating a true circular economy. In the last 2 years, we processed 8 million packages, recovering and selling 400 tons of recycled plastic and 15,000 liters of recovered oil, generating socio-environmental impact benefits: every 200 tons of plastic recycled by Eco Panplas (monthly capacity) , 7,5 billion liters of water preserved from the environment, 215 tons of contaminated plastic out of landfills, 306 tons less greenhouse gas emission, 632 waste pickers needed to collect this material, 75% energy-saving and avoided- with the use of 120,000 liters of water in production. This solution is already consolidated in the Brazilian market with all current production sold; and recognized through the most relevant prizes won We are able to expand this solution through units with high productive capacity, installed in containers, thus multiplying the benefits and contributing to a better world. Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
It generates environmental, economic and social value in the plastic recycling chain. It does not use water, it does not generate waste, it does not generate contaminated effluent (today 80% of the effluents are discharged into the environment without any type of treatment), it recovers all the contaminating oil that turns into byproduct, efficient recycling that allows the plastic valorization the plastic that returns to be packaging and because of this valuation, we can pay a higher value to the waste pickers. Own Innovative Technology; no use of water in the decontamination, no wastes or effluents generated, ground plastic fully clean (higher quality), contaminant recovery that becomes a byproduct (zero environmental risk), Hazardous Waste transformed into Non-Hazardous Waste (report NBR 10.004), Rating, recovery and traceability of all inputs (plastic, oil, label), the plastic becomes packaging again, and benefits with Social-Environmental impact are generated. It's a green patent. We obtained in 3 years, because it was framed as a green patent for being a clean technology and had its analysis priority. every 200 tons of plastic recycled by Eco Panplas (monthly capacity) , 7,5 billion liters of water preserved from the environment, 215 tons of contaminated plastic out of landfills, 306 tons less greenhouse gas emission, 632 waste pickers needed to collect this material, 75% energy-saving and avoided- with the use of 120,000 liters of water in production.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
On the one hand we have the big multinationals manufacturers of lubricating oil anf governments, that through cooperatives and environmental companies collect this material and need to make the correct destination. They collect the packages at the gas stations and car workshops, drain the excess oil and organize the bottles in bales that are sold and sent to our factory. So we currently need an initial working capital to buy these packages. On the other hand, we have the Plastic Transformation Industries that buy from us and use plastic to make new packaging, benefiting from the superior quality we can achieve in decontamination and lower costs. There are several commercial ways to replicate the process to increase the volume of recycled packaging, but we believe that the most appropriate would be the association with packaging manufacturers to install recycling units next to the packaging production units, thus providing quality recycled material for the preparation of new packaging and lowering the cost of raw materials and increasing everyone's profit. They would be modular units already installed in containers, taking up little space and making it possible to be close to large volumes and generating sources, facilitating all logistics and scalability. It would require 20 units in 7 production plants to meet the entire volume discarded only in Brazil and only for lubricating oil packaging.
