HELTON FREIGHT LIMITED
Explain your idea in details:
Reliable and affordable transportation is very essential in our country, nonetheless some areas are still finding it difficult to acquire the services adequately especially the rural areas for example in the northern part of Uganda in places like Yumbe, Adjumani, etc. or those far from town centres where most transport service providers don't want to send their vehicles to those areas in fear of damaging them due to the poor roads in some of the areas. Even those that manage to provide vehicles, provide very old ones without essentials like air conditioners considering the dusty roads in the above mentioned areas. As we interacted with local community leaders, medical professionals, development workers and the locals, we discovered that there is a critical need for basic medical transportation solutions in rural areas of Uganda. Many rural communities still lack efficient medical transportation and live far from the nearest medical facilities. People often resort to slow and unsafe means of transportation such as riding inside a wheelbarrow or oxcart, riding on the back of a bicycle or motorcycle, or being carried many kilometres by family members or neighbours. In other instances, expectant mothers have no option but to give birth from home with help from traditional midwives. These challenges have contributed to poor maternal health and the rising child mortality rates in the rural communities. Due to the inadequate transport services, very many organizations are finding it difficult to operate effectively such organizations include UNHCR and WHO among others, who play an important role of ensuring the wellbeing of the refugees and people in highly poverty stricken areas in our country. Our tourism sector is hindered as tourists find it hard to get safe, reliable and comfortable transportation. There's so much unemployment in our country especially among the youths
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We want to provide readily available and affordable transportation in all parts of the country regardless of the areas with very poor roads or harsh living conditions. We also want to provide vehicles in good mechanical conditions with all necessities like air conditioners and real time monitoring for safety purposes. We shall make sure all our drivers are availed with intensive driving lessons and skills to curb careless and unprofessional driving. We hope to work with different organizations that need timely transport services for example UNHCR which ensures the wellbeing of refugees by providing them with all the vehicles they need in transportation of food, the refugees and staff especially in the remote areas. We want to provide tourists with safe rides to their destinations given the real time tracking as mentioned above, and comfortable or luxurious rides for those in need of the VIP treatment. Our country is filled with many energetic youths, so we want to start by availing them with all the skills they need like driving lessons to cope with the job opportunities we have to offer hence covering the unemployment gap. Target Market Our company focuses on various kinds of customers in particular those in dire need of safe and reliable transportation who include the following: Residents, students and expectant mothers in rural areas who are in most need of efficient and affordable transport solutions. International organizations like United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Programme among others who may not be able acquire all the necessary vehicles needed for their operations. Tourism agencies that need to outsource transport services due to the increasing number of tourists in the country. Private companies that may need specific vehicles like luxurious ones, larger ones for specific occasions
Plans for implementation and sustainability
For starters we may not have a dedicated marketing person, but we are working on signing up on the different social media platforms and building a company website which will enable us reach our potential clients. Google search advertising is also going to be an option. Fortunately, we have a few contacts from the different international organizations thanks to one of our team member's logistics experience in northern Uganda. Lastly but not least, our very affordable fares are going to be an important marketing tool for us. USE OF FUNDS Our biggest expense will be purchasing at least two company vehicles at the beginning and then as the company grows, we buy more company vehicles and do away with hiring completely. Other expenses include city licensing fees, rent fees, car hire charges, fuel and purchase of GPS tracking systems for the security of our vehicles, clients and cargo. We don't plan on paying ourselves salary at least until the fourth month, and even then we will keep them low so as we can invest back into the business as much as we can. SOURCES OF FUNDS Since banks need collateral security to acquire loans which we don't have at the moment, we are putting our faith in a non-interest personal loan we expect to get from Hellen's friend (about ugx18million) although it's unfortunately not enough for the company's smooth operation but it's a start. In future we plan to grow through bootstrapping and reinvesting our profits in the business rather than taking on additional debts.
