Sleva-Saver: an impact investment startup adding value to food waste.
Explain your idea in details:
Less than USD5 billion is spend annually in food aid, and about USD20 billion annually would ensure food security for everyone. So should we increase food aid? Maybe not, we can look at hunger from a different perspective. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations food losses and waste amounts to roughly US$ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries. A combined USD990 billion worth of food waste, that is more than 200 times the amount used for food aid. Sleva-Saver is a, soon to be launched, food innovation startup which intends to eradicate hunger through minimising and adding value to food waste, and make money for its shareholders after listing on the stock exchange. Sleva-Saver will be an e-commerce company with a Sleva-Saver app which: 1. Allows Famers to sell ingredients, that would otherwise be lost, to food outlets or food processing companies at a discount (Sleva in Czech language). 2.Matches food outlets or grocery stores, wishing to sell food (predicted to become waste) at a discount, with clients. 3.Links donors directly to recipients, through mobile money transfer donations, for discounted food, can reach nearest Sleva-Saver partners. The app then sends notifications reminding recipients to collect . 4.Allows food outlets to turn unavoidable food waste into fertilizer, and sell to partner farmers at a discount. Everyone saves money, hunger reduces, and malnutrition is prevented. Sleva-Saver will make money through charging a commission for all food sold through the Sleva-Saver app and small subscriptions for clients who wish to save money by buying cheaper food. Sleva-Saver will be a platform where clients can reserve food in advance, preventing the production of food noone buys. The profits generated will be used to scale-up the startup, and pay dividends to investors.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Goal 2 of Zero hunger will be achieved since Zero Food waste will ensure that there is surplus food. Health will be improved through the reduction of malnutrition diseases, and through reduction of waste( food accounts for about 40% of waste). The money saved at every stage will be used in other sectors like education, building better infrastructure and providing safe water. We will use the systemsware logframe to ensure evaluation and verification of progress to achieve a target of 80% food waste reduction in chosen markets. Ras Al Khaima has a population of around 355000 and Zimbabwe has a population of 16 million, so we are targeting about 60% of RAK residence who regularly transact online, and 30% of the Zimbwean of the Zimbabwean population in the first year. After each year we will review our market share and adapt to the needs of the market. Initially, the venture will be having a permanent research team on the ground composed of local youth thus creating employment. The results of the research will be used when entering new markets. By 2030 we project that the company will have a global presence, and that new companies will have adopted our concept and food waste will be a thing of the past, and there will be zero hunger. The population of the world is expected to double by the turn of the century, for instance the population of Africa alone is expected to grow to over four(4) billion. Someone has to feed this burgoening population, and Sleva-Saver will play a major role in ensuring food security. We would not want more than ten(10) billion impoverished, unemployed, and unhealthy people. In the long run, Sleva-Saver will provide employment while ensuring a wealthy and healthy population by making food available and encouraging savings.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The Sleva-Saver business model: it will be an ecommerce company which charges a 1.5% commision for food, ingridients, or fertilisers sold on its platform. It will also charge a USD1 monthly subscription to clients who are not providing any services on the platform. Financing source: Sleva-Saver is not a very capital intensive startup, the initial source of finance will be contributions of cofounders, and if need be angel investors. All profits will be reinvested into the startup for a minimum period of five(5) years so as to scale up the startup. When the venture has grown it will the be listed on the securities exchange. Collaborators: Sleva-Saver will collaborate with farmers, food processing companies, food outlets, waste management companies and clients who buy food, also governments and non-governmental organisations. Two pilot markets are under consideration, the emirate of Ras Al Khaima in the United Arab Emirate which is last(No.67) on the Food Sustainability Index and Zimbabwe where there are perennial food shortages. The venture will then enter new markets factoring in adjustments from monitoring and evaluations. If we manage to adress 11% of the food waste, then we will have saved about USD100 billion, and our commission of 1.5% will amount to USD1.5 billion in revenues, adding subscriptions of a dollar a month for a target 10 million customers an extra USD120 million can be made. Being an ecommerce company, going global is easier through technology, and we will not need warehouses or logistics so the risk is minimised. Farmers, food processing companies, and food outlets can invest in the company, thereby ensuring that the company is sustainable. The company will become their vehicle for saving and making money. The company will also invest in their farms, food outlets, and food processing companies to ensure its on survial. Everyone benefits.
Imagine a six year old child faints from hunger, only to realize, when he revives, that almost the entire school has gathered around him, and an unknown schoolmate is squeezing juicy droplets out of a mango onto his tongue, then a teacher takes him to her house, feeds him, and enrolls him into a feeding scheme where an aid agency feeds him daily with a plate of beans. That is how I survived hunger while growing up in a remote African village bedeviled by perennial droughts. Later, I received a development scholarship and relocated to Europe, I was shocked that there is so much food waste in some parts of the world, and starvation in others. Why are others hungry when the world produces enough food? If the world is sick, hunger is the symptom, food waste is the cause, and Sleva-Saver is the cure. I have more than nine(9) years of university education, I held many leadership positions, I am the founder, and current chairperson, of African Students Association in Czech Republic (ASA-Czechia). I interned at more than ten(10) hospitals in three(3) countries, including Parirenyatwa hospital in Zimbabwe, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg General Hospital in South Africa, and Motol Hospital in Czech Republic, and I am a serial volunteer. Strangers saved my life, my life mission is to save lives of strangers. I was introduced to stock markets at the age of twelve(12). My father allowed us to watch only two television programs: business news and make money make sense, and my mother operated a small-scale enterprise. This led to the launch of my first food innovation startup at the age of nineteen(19). However, I left business to pursue specialized knowledge, so that I could be equiped to take on bigger entreprenuerial challenges.
