Biofuels produced from crop residue and non food oil seed to replace fossil fuel in Africa.
Explain your idea in details:
Objective: Production of biofuels made from crop residue,and non food oil seed to replace fossil fuel for powering automotive engines use for transportation in Africa. Creating efforts to address the danger of economic, environmental, climatic and social security challenges consequential from the utilization of fossil fuel,which is currently the main energy source in Africa. Activities: The raw materials for the production of biofuels(Second Generation biofuels) will be obtain from agricultural crop residue and non food oil seeds. Agricultural crop residue comprises of Seed pods,Leaves,stalk and stubble (Stems) all which are obtained after the harvesting of food crops on African's farmland. The non food oil seed mainly focus upon will be Jatropha due to its irrelevance to human and animal consumption,and its easily grown characteristics. Jatropha can be massively cultivated in countries like Tanzania,Mali,Mozambique and Ghana. Second generation biofuels will be produced through the conversion of lignocellolosic materials found in a range of biomass sources from crop residue. Lignocellulosic biomass consist of polysaccharides which are converted into sugars through hydrolysis or chemical ( or Combined) processes; the sugars are then fermented into biofuel using existing fermentation technology. Innovative Approach: Second generation technologies will be use to produce transportation fuel of desired characteristics,including fuels virtually indistinguishable from their fossil fuel counterparts. The following innovative technologies will be adopted 1.Enzymatic Hydrolysis: Lignocellolosic materials undergo pretreatment to release the cellulose from lignin and hemicellulose and subsequent hydrolysis prior to fermentation process. The cellulose is then converted into glucose while the hemicellulose parts afford Pentose and hexoses. Micro organism then convert the glucose into biofuel. 2.Thermo chemical Process: This involve the conversion of biomass at supercritical temperature and pressure and are usually at higher reaction condition. Any or both of this thermochemical process will be adopted (Pyrolysis,or Gasification and hydrothermal liquefaction). 3.Hydro treating: This process will be use to produce biobased diesel from Jatropha seed.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Targets: Replacement of fossil fuel with biofuels(Second generation biofuels)made from crop residue and non food oil seed via modern technology by producing biofuels all year round ensuring energy security. Reduction of green house gas emissions to the range of (70-90%) compared to fossil fuel and providing new opportunity in socio-economic development. Increased Investment in Sustainable Agriculture due to huge profit that will be maximized from the abundant production of food and fuel resulting to reduction in cost of food crops(Zero hunger) and efficient natural resources management such as land and water. Averting food versus fuel conflict by the replacement of soil nutrients that ought to be replenish by crop residue and putting factors that enhances the availability of food crop/crop residue and non food oil seed all year round in place such as Crop rotation, No tillage,inclusion of annual or perennial cover crops to decrease soil erosion and water pollution,use of manures or organic amendments.(Safety of Life On Land). Measures to Evaluate Success involve 1.Economic profitability or viability: Investors will only be willing to invest in biofuel production if its economically viable.(Economic growth in the society) 2.Cost reducing technological advancement in biofuel production and relative price competitiveness with use of varying biofuel crop residue (Responsible production and consumption). 3.Conversion efficiency improvement that lead to better economic outcome or activities. 4. Increasing the accessibility to more market by utilizing value added coproduct e.g glycerine and also introducing good upstream and downstream process similar to fossil fuel production. 5.Improved welfare by expanding access to electricity,infrastructure,good portable water supply,improved health care and reducing air pollution. 6.New employment opportunities that are socially and environmentally sustainable, improvement in the rural/local economy. 7.Providing opportunities for productive work that gives a fair income, job security and adequate social protection for employees and their families,and better prospect for social integration. Plans for implementation and sustainability
Description of business model: Biofuel production from crop residue and non food oil seed (Jatropha) will cover the sustainability of People, Planet and Profit in other to have a balance ecosystem. Alternative source of energy must not affect the climate (Planet) negatively while huge (Profit) must be made by (People) on biofuel investment. Both the out grower and plantation model of farming will be the basis for the supply of biofuel raw materials. 1. The out grower model:Small scale farmers grows food crops such as cereals and ensure that the harvest residues,not edible are sold to companies located within the same country (African country) or in another country within Africa that convert the residue to biofuel. For jatropha seed use for biodiesel small scale farmers will plant the seed on separated portion of their farmland. This will ensure the sustainability of the local economy due to profit maximization and employment of rural community. Fertilizers are given to the farmers to replace the nutrient that ought to be provided by the crop residue (Planet Protection). 2.The Plantation model: Foreign Investors or the government meet with the rural/urban communities farmers to set up large scale food crops farming/jatropha planting. Incentives such as rural electrification, infrastructure creation and development,Community health care improvement, Clean water supply project,building of community primary and secondary school are given to the communities to let them know that the investors have their interest in mind. Food crops residue/jatropha cultivation are given as requirement for Employment guarantee scheme. Financing Source: Biofuel financing source will be domestic/foreign entrepreneurs,government agencies,public/private banks,investors within Africa and beyond Africa. Responsible investment in the biofuel sector need to be base on agreed set of principles and criteria which are measurable, reportable and verifiable. Collaborating with various stakeholders which includes industries,farmers,academics (Research Purpose) and Non Government Organization.

Am a student of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta studying mechanical engineering. Am a certified CAD (Computer Aided Design) user,Certified Health,Safety and Environment Practitioner. Somefun Segun is also a machinist,he operates machine tools such as lathe machine,universal milling machine,drilling machines and power tools e.t.c. Segun want to be a successful entrepreneur/CEO of a machine shop with standard modern equipment. Environmental Pollution in my country (Nigeria) due to the emission of poisonous substance into the atmosphere by automobiles, auto motives, industrial machinery/processes causes the depletion of ozone layer,causes Green house effect and makes the air people breath in impure prompt me into looking for alternative way of generating energy to replace fossil fuel in Africa to safeguard the balance of the ecosystem. Being a CAD expert, I design of machine that that help to solve human problem. My aim is also to impact the world of Industrial Engineering by the effective and efficient use of man and resources for profit maximization. Being an advocate for free from pollution environment I was involved in world clean up day (September 2018) to help clean up public market place in my country.
