Healthy production and consumption of food through permaculture

Permaculture is an application of agroecology, that is it is biomimicry. By its innovative and unique way of organic and eco friendly farming, we can restore ecosystems and reduce the impacts of the way we produce and consume food. Permaculture cares for humans and nature. It centers on food production that makes the best use of natures goods and services while not damaging these resources. We produce more food using fewer resources and this is what is exactly needed in a growing world population. Problems like famine and health issues can be solved. As permaculture does not use chemicals, synthetic fertilisers and the food is not genetically modified, we can ensure better health. Using renewable energy and reinvestment of resources are just part of the wonders permaculture does. My objectives are planning, investment, production, marketing, selling, development and evaluation. After receiving funds, I intend to plan a farm, its resources and start growing local fruits and vegetables. After harvest, I will sell them to the farmers' market and to retailers. The innovative parts are: I will integrate Community Supported Agriculture with time and success of my idea and; incorporate the Agricultural Value Chains and start supplying to supermarkets. At the same time I will process and package dried and cut food, all grown through permaculture. I will follow up with online marketing. Later on, I will convert the farm into a food forest. Then people may come and spend a day by helping grow or harvest, as well as this will be an opportunity to sensitize people about responsible production and consumption and its benefits. There can also be an attempt to hire and retain good people.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Though permaculture offers innumerable positive impacts, I will consider three main issues. First, the way we, humans produce food and how it is consumed. It is all about an innovative and organic way of interaction between humans and nature. It uses no inorganic fertilisers and pesticides, hence ensuring nearby ecosystems are protected, for example eutrophication in marine ecosystems is prevented, especially during heavy rainfalls. Permaculture uses renewable energies and rainfall water for the productions. Less than 3 percent of the world's water is drinkable of which 2.5 percent is frozen in the Antarctica, Arctic and glaciers. Humanity must therefore rely on 0.5 percent for all its needs. All materials is reused, hence ensuring a more eco friendly world. Earth's natural biodiversity can be conserved, it is a solution to climate change if used appropriately and to its full potential. Species can be protected from extinction. Food from permaculture when consumed leaves less carbon footprints. Secondly, permaculture is as healthy for humans as it is for our planet. It is not genetically modified, meaning less diseases or allergies. There are evidences, for instance, Partners in Health ran a model permaculture farmer program in Malawi which helped HIV/AIDs patients get the additional caloric and micronutrient intake that they needed. So an increase in good health and well-being is expected. Thirdly, since sustainable consumption and production aims at doing more and better with less, famine can be reduced around the world. According to International Food Policy Research Institute, the world needs to produce more food with fewer resources to ensure adequate food production for the growing world population. Furthermore, permaculture has the ability to help farmers adapt to climate change by making crops hardy and restoring soils.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
I believe my main source of capital will be funds. Though I have a few savings, it may not be sufficient. After the successful implementation of my idea, I expect to grow it by tactical planning, calculated and appropriate investments and collaborating with effective organisations. My idea can be categorized into two. First I will to the farming as my own and sell to retailers, supermarkets as well as organic restaurants. Secondly, I will use the Community Supported Agriculture(CSA). CSA generally focuses on the production of foods for a local community, often using organic methods. People buy shares in a farm's projected harvest in advance and for a set period (a season, or a year, for example) and receive a regular supply of farm.
I am Damini Kesheeka Devi Bhookhun and I am 18 years old. Since I was little, I have always loved nature and animals, be it exotic or domestic. I have always cherished the dream of one day working with nature, animals and for their welfare. This is why I have chosen my idea, 'Healthy production and consumption of food through permaculture', because I believe the way we produce food is a major contributor to climate change and the extinction of species, as well as it affects human health too. I have decided to do permaculture in an innovative way due to its multiple benefits for everyone. I am motivated to do something for our planet, so that our ecosystems can be restored. I would describe myself as hardworking and ambitious girl. I also like to try new things even if I do not succeed at the end because I know I got to learn a lesson from it. At secondary school, I took science subjects, for A level, namely; Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. I also did english( General Paper) and French. At O level I did English, French, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Sociology, and Food and Nutrition. These subjects can be effective for me as I want to pursue a career where I can be helpful and contribute in a way to help conserve nature. At school, I participated in many extracurricular activities and competitions, for instance Model United Nations(MUN), Omnicane award, Concours Marie Curie -Français Et Sciences 2017 in which I got the second prize and music performances. Moreover, I had participated in the 2017 GOI essay competition. These activities not only improved me as a person, but also motivated me to work harder and better. I eventually obtained lots of experiences and knowledge from these.
