Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Explain your idea in details:
Wanda Maps is a community to create and share social trip maps. Trip maps can be reused or adapted by others in their network, making travel planning more efficient, recommendations personalized, while giving travelers more unique, local experiences. This increases the visibility of local businesses and distributes the tourist load, while generating valuable data on traveler behavior and dispersal for destination marketing organizations.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With better data and by being part of a network of destination managers invested in sustainable tourism, they will be able to balance the needs of visitors and their local community. Ultimately we will be able to provide specific management suggestions for areas of natural and cultural significance based on collaborative research using our datasets. So our ultimate impact will be: a connected, supported network of destination managers, more robust, well balanced local economies in popular tourist areas, and fewer negative impacts to natural and cultural resources due to overtourism.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We ethically track traveler behavior and dispersal by requesting permission from every user to buy their data upon registration, and distribute a portion of the profits from each data sale back to users. We sell data to destination marketing organizations and local businesses in custom local reports or raw data bundles. We also offer hyper targeted advertising to local businesses, a pro membership for travelers and local businesses for access to advanced functionality, and take a 2% commission for all direct bookings made on our marketplace for lodging, transportation, and activities.
