Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Plastic Cleaner App (PC App)
Explain your idea in details:
The major cause of marine pollution is due to the dumping of waste along coastlines, littering on beaches, and the breaking down of ships. Floods and other storm-related events flush this waste into the sea, where it sinks or is carried away by currents. Marine pollution also causes biodiversity loss and hampers ecosystem functions and services. An estimated 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the worlds oceans each year. I am currently working towards SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 14 - Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. I had invented a robot called M-Bot Cleaner,Marine Robot Cleaner which intends to provide vital protection,in a sustainable manner to the marine habitats as it removes the waste from the surface of the water bodies which facilitates cleaner waters and improved marine life. Plastic Cleaner App along with the Marine Robot Cleaner will overcome this major issue and also save the marine species from being extinct. The app will scan the plastics floating on the water surface and automatically send a signal to the Robot to start collecting the wastes from the seas.. Description The M-Bot Cleaner Robot will be available on the coastlines and in different locations across the seas and oceans. Plastic Cleaner app is designed to automatically send signals to the Marine Robot Cleaners that is floating on various locations on the rivers/seas/oceans. As soon as the signal from the Plastic Cleaner App reaches the nearest Marine Robot Cleaner it moves to that particular location in the ocean or river to collect the plastic wastes. As soon as the water surface is cleaned completely of plastics, the app will send a signal to the Robot to stop its cleaning process.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Justification Tiny particles of plastics, microbeads plastics, hardly visible to the naked eye, flow straight into the worlds oceans. Sea animals like fish, sharks and turtles absorb or eat micro plastics beads. These microbeads are passed along the marine food chain. Since humans are ultimately at the top of this food chain, it is likely that we are also ingest them. Micro plastics beads are not biodegradable and once they enter the marine environment, they are impossible to remove. So my app and robot will clean the microbeads as well as plastic pieces floating on the water surface.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
I have also designed an App, Plastic Cleaner App to control my robot remotely. Plastic Cleaner App along with the Marine Robot Cleaner will overcome this major issue and also save the marine species from being extinct. The app will scan the plastics floating on the water surface and automatically send a signal to the Robot to start collecting the wastes from the seas/oceans. Applicability: PC App can be applied to the real world by fishermen and navy officers who move around in the seas and oceans. Impact: The plastic pollution will be greatly reduced and in turn our marine ecosystems will be saved considerably thereby causing no harm to our food chain.
I am Sainath Manikandan, studying in grade 7 in GEMS United Indian School. I assume various roles as an innovator, active environmentalist, outstanding student, passionate social campaigner, Abacus graduate, Brown belt in Karate, Junior Emergency Response Lead Member, Keyboard player and a budding artist. I spread awareness about the need to protect, conserve and preserve the earths resources and reduce, reuse and recycle wastes and Say No to plastics. I am a Drop It Youth Ambassador, Tunza Eco Generation and Students for the Earth Ambassador and an active member of Emirates Environmental Group,EEG. I have persuaded many students to rethink plastics as they are not our bodys best friend as it affects both marine species and our health. Sainath Manikandan is the innovator of Marine Robot Cleaner, Agribot and 2 apps to control the robots. He intends to build the MBot in a bigger scale to collect floating wastes from water surfaces. He had presented his innovation MBot Cleaner in Innovator 2018, Dubai Makers Space, Global Innovation Showcase, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Masdar The Festival . Agribot was presented at Innovator 2019 and Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture. Sainath have started his campaign, PEPC Campaign and collecting recyclables in their school and community. He had won the prestigious Diana Award 2018 who believe that young people have the power to change the world. Won the first place in Beeah Environment Excellence School Award Outstanding Individual Student category 2019. His innovation won accolades as Best Technology Project in Future Entrepreneurs organized by Abu Dhabi Chamber. He is an active member of Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) and School Eco-Club member, an environmentalist and social campaigner. He is Young Times magazine panelist and writes articles to raise environmental awareness and uses his oratory skills and writing skills to raise awareness amongst his schoolmates.
