Full Immunization Cycle Support Programe
Explain your idea in details:
Immunization is a powerful and cost-effective health interventions which averts an estimated 2 to 3 million deaths every year [1,2]. World Health Organization (WHO) considers a child to have received all basic vaccinations if he or she has received: BCG vaccination against tuberculosis; three doses of DPT vaccine to prevent diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (or three doses of pentavalent, which includes DPT and vaccinations against both hepatitis B and haemophilus influenza type B); at least three doses of polio vaccine; and one dose of measles vaccine. These vaccinations should be received during the first year of life . In Kenya, an infant is considered to be fully vaccinated if the infant has received all WHO basic vaccinations and three doses of pneumococcal vaccine. Community health workers (CHVs) have emerged as critical human resources able to extend health systems and basic services directly to communities and households . In resource poor countries, CHVs are increasingly recognized as a critical link in improving access to health services .This idea therefore intend to effectively utilize CHVs by using them to monitor all immunization stages(Full immunization cycle) from immunization given at birth to the final one.We shall enroll in the program new born babies from poor rural areas in the country, monitor and track their immunization process till the end.We shall drop them out of the project after 5 years from time of enrollment(at birth). By this,we are sure of reducing child mortality rates by a big margin.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The primary benefit of vaccination is that it prevents disease. Immunization is considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century, and experts agree that immunization is key to staying healthy.A full immunization schedule will prevent/help in reducing under five deaths by more than 70%. It will also drastically reduce the spread of infectious diseases by 80%.To determine the success rate, will shall use the existing mortality rate data at the ministry of health against the current data will collect as the program progresses.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We plan to partner and collaborate with Ministry of Health, health stake holders and potential donors in the health sector to finance our activities. The model is to put CHVs on a small monthly stipend for their upkeep, and also facilitate their movement within the community and health facilities.
I am a 34 year old Kenyan with extensive experience in public Health Research. In the course of executing my duties as a researcher i do make a lot of contacts with children under the age of five years with different health problems and this is what has motivated me think of this idea.
