Improving WASH service sustainability in rural areas of Uganda.
Explain your idea in details:
The Objectives of the project are to improve the water, hygiene and sanitation status of the targeted communities and schools, to equip the selected members with skills and techniques in hygiene management and promotion and sustainability, to reduce the disease prevalence among the school children and the communities as well enhance the protection and sustainability of the WaSH structures set up. Among the activities of the project, Community mobilization and community introductory meetings will be conducted, signing MOUs, selecting and training selected members for hygiene and sanitation promotion, conduct demonstration trainings, follow ups on trained CMT members and setting up hygiene structures as well compiling reports. The approach will be to select and train the ten volunteer members(male and female) from the community during a Focus group discussions to carry on promotion activities of hygiene and sanitation practices. A Demonstration training to set up the WaSH structures (plate stands, bath shelters, tippy taps and soak pits) will be conducted so as to aid the trained members replicate the same in their communities. Hygiene and sanitation Promotion at this level will begin by the trained ten volunteers in the respective communities. Follow up visits among the trained CMTs and the community beneficiaries will be conducted using the interview and sampling methods to assess the impact of the project. At the end of the project, village competitions will be conducted to award the best households that have actively participated and put into practice what the project has been up to thus obtaining the overall goal of improving the health situation in the rural communities of Uganda and WaSH service sustainability.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
If the project is well implemented and monitored, there will be a reduction in diarrhea cases especially among children between 0-5years, a reduction in the treatment expenditures from Ugshs12,000 to 7,000ugshs on diseases, improvement in class attendance for the school pupils from 20/56 pupils to 48/56 pupils due to low cases of disease attacks like diarrhea and malaria, improvement in class performance from a 40% grade to 78% thus better academic grades and as well poverty reduction among the rural families due to low expenditures. To achieve these impacts and the WaSH service sustainability goal, the project has to build the capacity of the different structures, encourage the participation of both male and female, volunteerism should be emphasized at the initiation stage of the project, stipulate clear roles and responsibilities of the community members, conduct hygiene and sanitation demonstration trainings and keep a clear track record through follow ups on the project activities and objectives and document at each stage of the project. This will be a guiding tool to the success of the project. Don't forget to engage in the other stakeholders at the district and sub county level for guidance, follow up and a back up on the project after the implementers' exit from the implementation community.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
It is a community driven project that aims at improving the water, hygiene and sanitation situation of rural areas. Its a hands on community activity in the rural areas mostly. At the initiation stage, implementers must ensure that the beneficiaries understand that its their project and hence its successful implementation and sustainability solely depends on them. This project is implemented with active participation of beneficiaries and it also addresses other development cross cutting issues like gender, HIV/AIDS, environment and sustainability. This project involves working with community volunteers (men and women) within the rural community of implementation. Most of the materials to be used for this intervention are community based because we use local raw materials especially for demonstration trainings from their fields. Just a few materials are brought in to supplement or add on the available raw materials. Direct beneficiaries should show total commitment to making a user friendly and realistic sustainability plan but with the implementers' support. In collaboration, we work with district, sub county and local council officials at a higher level for easy penetration in the communities, promotion and sustainability after project exit. Stakeholders should agree on how their plan should be drawn out, with well stipulated roles showing who is responsible for what and detailing the strategies to mobilize and account for the sustainability, operation and maintenance. Constant follow up visits in the project area are very necessary so as to ensure continuity and sustainability of the services for the project success and better project results of reduction in death rates, reduction in poverty levels and better school performance for school going pupils.
