From Poppy to Honey Related Products
Explain your idea in details:
'There is nothing we can grow except Poppy,' said the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were displaced due to the civil war in Myanmar. This is not a new story for us. But in 2016, we decided we wanted to help them find alternative source of income. Each of us had been working in community development sector through education, but wanted to do more. What inspired us most was the idea of creating opportunity for IDPs poppy farmers and women to thrive for alternative source of income. We asked how we can do that and what skill do we have in us. Soap and Candles!! So was the idea of Clean Bee, a small social enterprise that supports IDPs and women through crafting handmade soap and candles in Shan State, Myanmar. We pool essential resources for our products from them as much as we can. So, theres a story behind every product we made.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We believe that providing sustainable market for honey, beeswax and using the IDPs locals' product in Clean Bee Soap and Candles will encourage them to end their reliance on the cultivation of poppies. Thus it reduces poverty in the region and creates sustainable communities. Clean Bee's success will be measured by the number of IDPs beekeepers in IDP region after Clean Bee's initiative. It will also be measured by the number of partnerships Clean Bee has built with the local IDPs producers and farmers. Most importantly, Clean Bee's success can be evaluated upon the income of the IDPs locals after the initiative.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
At the individual level, currently, we are using our own savings to buy beeswax and honey from the IDP beekeeper in a very small scale. Clean Bee then made honey soap and beeswax candles to sell them in the market. This is how Clean Bee is generating our finance. Due to the initiative, more IDPs are interested in starting the Bee Keeping projects. However, they lack the know-how to produce quality refined honey and beeswax. At the community level, Clean Bee will collaborate with a bee keeping company in Myanmar to train women and locals from Nar Lern village ( our first target IDP village) on Bee Keeping, Honey and Beeswax production. Clean Bee will then buy these products for our soap and candles as well as connecting their products to the companies or individuals who are passionate about making an impact. By supporting IDPs, Clean Bee generates its income while IDPs get alternative source of income. Thus the idea reduces poverty, promote sustainability, and lessen their reliance on poppy farming.
I am a 27 years old individual who is passionate about sustainability. Since my high school graduation, I have been working with a community based organization for over 5 years. I have witnessed several human rights violations, poverty, and systematic oppression in Shan State in which I am living in. I have worked with war victims and international organization to publish the report of victims voices in Shan State. Moreover, when given the challenge to tackle indecent working condition, me and my team worked with local labor organizations in Myanmar and presented the idea of a platform where workers can file complaints and violations in their workplace directly to respected labor organizations. We were so happy when we were named as the Winner of Telenor Youth Form 2017 because of the platform. I think I wouldnt be able give practical and innovative solutions to problems without my social work as background.
