Let Us Be Heard!: Interactive Platform for Victims of Sexual Assault
Explain your idea in details:
Let Us Be Heard! is an online interactive platform that will do the following: 1) act as a crisis helpline to those in immediate need of assistance and emotional support by providing emotional assistance, and lending an ear to those who are afraid there is no one to listen to them, 2) provide jobs to women all around the world, who may have been victims of sexual assault (these women will undergo basic vocational training, provided by the platform to assist in the crisis helpline aforementioned, and be compensated for their work as will be mentioned later on), 3) act as a direct contact between the victim and local police stations, we plan on our woman volunteers to create outreach programs with their local police stations to create a strong relationship between them and make it easier for our sexual assault victims to come forth with what has happened to them, 4) provide step by step assistance in filing sexual assault claims against perpetrators, by creating appropriate researched documentation on how to file claims in countries all around the world, 5) and finally and most importatntly Let Us Be Heard will be an online platform for women all around the world to share their stories and what has happened to them and will allow women to help each other and bolster politcial and social movements around the world and help each other through the means of technology!
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Let Us Be Heard! targets UN Goals 5 and 10, at their very roots. Goal 5 (Gender Equality), Target 2, "END ALL VIOLENCE AGAINST AND EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN AND GIRLS" Will be targeted through our site, because with more and more women standing up against sexual exploitation, legislation regarding the same will strengthen making perpetrators around the world hear that action comes from their crimes, and with more perpetrators being detained sexual assault occurrences will drive down. The site for the UN commission for the status of women, reports annual numbers of reported sexual assault cases, and with a drive down in these numbers, we can measure success. Goal 5, Target B & C "PROMOTE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN THROUGH TECHNOLOGY & ADOPT AND STRENGTHEN POLICIES AND ENFORCEABLE LEGISLATION FOR GENDER EQUALITY" would be covered through our site, since women around the world would be connecting through technology, our site also provides jobs to women around the world, allowing empowerment for women, furthermore, with more women speaking up, governments and law-making bodies will be forced to listen and amend their current outlook to sexual assault. Goal 10, Target 3 & 4 "ENSURE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND END DISCRIMINATION & ADOPT FISCAL AND SOCIAL POLICIES THAT PROMOTES EQUALITY" as aforementioned, the empowerment of women will force legislature of each respective country to make it easier for women to come out against their abusers and guarantee punishment for the same. We would measure this by a drive down in numbers of reported sexual assault victims, and a change in the international legislature regarding sexual assault and statutory rape.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
To begin with, we would need the website to be developed. Even with my wide array of skills, web development is not one of them. To create a website, with features that allow women around the world to chat with us, create a blog-type platform for women and victims to tell their stories, and empower each other, and create an essentially functional website, we would need website developers. To compensate them for their work, we would need to pay them, this money would be sourced by crowdfunding, on sites such as GoFundMe, in which we share details of our cause and publicise the cause, and with much luck, people will donate. For marketing, we will heavily rely on social media marketing, through the ad programs available on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, this will increase our reach so that more and more woman know about our site and are able to access it. We plan on acquiring celebrities, who are famous for advocating speech against sexual assault, eg. Lili Reinhart, Lucy Hale etc. This celebrity endorsement will allow for a greater reach of our message. We will also be acquiring volunteers to run this site, like work on the helpline and since this is a non-profit movement they won't be paid for doing so, but we are hoping that the gratification is enough! To keep this site running on its feet, we will use the money from ad revenue on our site to pay our web developers to constantly keep the site running and some volunteers like me, will work on the site full-time and work on the betterment of the site, and women with this as a full-time job will be compensated for through ad revenue and donations.
My name is Oishani Nandi, I am 15 years old and I live in the bustling city of Mumbai in India. As rich and beautiful India is in its culture, it has recently been reported to be one of the world's unsafest places for women to live in. As a woman my self, this is jaw-dropping. Silence against abusers is something that spans all social strata in the world. After learning more and more about the epidemic of sexual assault, I learned that close members of my family and friends have lived in the shadows with their stories of sexual assault, and how social stigma makes it hard to come out with these stories. This is my primary motivation for creating Let Us Be Heard! Other than innovating and learning about social causes, you can find me playing one of my three string instruments. I have a very business oriented mind, and hence have undergone internships at two corporate offices, I am an avid participant in the Model United Nations scene and am to participate in Harvard Model United Nations. I recently underwent the Young Entrepreneurship Academy and received certification for doing so. You can find me working with NGO's both local and international from India all the way to Nigeria! Let Us Be Heard! Is more than just my self, it is a project for women around the world!
