Trash2Treasure: Increasing the Availability of Waste Services in Developing Countries
Explain your idea in details:
The objective of my project is two-fold: to reduce the amount of waste on India streets and to provide those in rural, low-income settings a small additional source of income. The first step of the project is to place temporary waste pickup facilities such as trash cans and recycling bins throughout rural Indian communities. However, just increasing access to such facilities cannot change long-held practices, so we will also hold short educational workshops on how to properly utilize the bins and what the benefits are. In addition to reducing littering, we also aim to help community members by partnering with recycling organizations to sell collected plastics and return the money to the community, thus creating a positive feedback loop that encourages bin usage.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The main problem my idea aims to solve is clean water and sanitation by reducing the amount of trash left on streets before it can become a serious sanitation and environmental hazard. The success of the program can be measured by the amount of trash collected in the bins and the amount of money returned to the community. With the help of this program, hopefully rural Indian communities can become cleaner and safer.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The actual cost for implementing the program is comparatively inexpensive because the main physical materials needed are for the bins, which can be made out of cheap plastics and cardboard. Thus, in the beginning we aim to start the program through our own funding and then later partner with outside organizations to spread our plan to multiple cities. Additionally, we aim to partner with recycling firms near the location of the target city so the waste we collect can be properly disposed of and that the money received for the recycled plastics can be returned to the community.
Ambitious sixteen year old aiming to improve conditions in her home country of India. I already have experience volunteering at non-profit organizations and have started my own initiative to teach young girls computer science skills. Growing up in both India and America has made me see the world through a dual lens and allowed me to notice the effects of littering in India and the common-held practice of simply throwing trash on the ground; an action that in the US is deemed illegal. Because of this, I wanted to take action and reduce the amount of trash that crowds Indias streets while also bettering others lives.
