Creating awareness about Sustainable tourism at schools
Explain your idea in details:
School students can be systematically trained for sustainable tourism by including the subject in the curriculum. I started the research to understand the level of awareness regarding sustainable tourism in students in the age group 6 to 12. With due permission of the school authorities, I conducted a pre-post impact analysis of a video created by me explaining Sustainable tourism to 150 participants from five schools in two phases once before the screening of the video and the second after the screening. The aspects covered in the video were: 1. Definition of Sustainable tourism: Sustainable tourism is a concept of visiting a place as a tourist and trying to create only a positive impact on the environment, society and economy. 2. Ways to make tourism sustainable: No littering Being considerate about the environment one is visiting Avoiding excessive waste creation (Zero waste) Reducing energy consumption Conserving water Educating oneself before going to tourist place Not purchasing or eating endangered species or products Supporting local economy by buying local handicrafts Eating local seasonal food to decrease carbon footprint Using public transport for tourism. To make sustainable tourism a part of the curriculum, school authorities were requested to club it with the picnics/excursions that they scheduled for their students every year. The teachers were requested to decide the travel destinations based on the motivation of sustainable tourism and educate the students before the excursion. Also, Board games, videos, quizzes or mobile apps can be used to create a long lasting impact for creating a responsible generation of tourists thus making tourism really sustainable.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Children studying in schools are a very important segment of every country who can be trained effectively towards sustainability goals like sustainable tourism. If this segment is concentrated upon and turned towards sustainable tourism, the future of tourism not only in my country India but all around the globe will be very bright. These children will then become the torch bearers of Sustainable tourism. The experiment that was conducted during the research phase produced encouraging results. A statistical analysis of the output was done using McNemars test and it was found that to enhance awareness about sustainable tourism videos can create a significant impact. As students retain visual learning better, videos can be used for training them. To make the impact clear and long lasting fun activities like board games and mobile apps can also be developed. As teachers play an important role in imparting quality education to the students, this activity can be conducted under their eminent leadership. The success of the pedagogical approach can be judged by statistical analysis as well as observation study. The evaluation can also be done by using a check-list method wherein the students can be asked to check the precautions they should take while visiting a tourist place.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
A book on sustainable tourism supplemented with a CD consisting of videos related to every chapter will be designed. The book will consist of stories, activities, worksheets and board games to hold the interest of the student and make this learning interesting for him or her. Content developers and designers followed by the publishers will make the product ready which will then be marketed to schools through Government agencies, Tourism agencies and NGOs working incessantly towards the goal of sustainable tourism. Funds will be raised from organizations related to tourism such as resorts, food suppliers, tours and travel agencies, game developers, etc. Also, companies manufacturing environment friendly products can collaborate in funding and marketing of the product.
