Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Explain your idea in details:
Despite the long history of the umbrella, its fundament has not yet been changed/reformulated. All has been done is about advancing its body material while its symmetrical structure has not yet been commercially tried to be reformulated to achieve higher functionality. The main objective of this case, therefore, is to redesign the fundamental structure of an umbrella to improve its lifetime functionality and increase its sustainability against the wind while keeping away rain and sun from the holder, all with respect to commercial market and the affordable clean energy goal (Goal No.7). To achieve such umbrella, we got lessons from a broad-leaved tree and thus drew it out and put it into practice to eventually increase the umbrella functionally against both rain and wind, all with respect to its easy-to-fold ability and affordable price for the market. In fact, a broad-leaved tree stands robust against steep winds and, by its nature, smartly navigate the raindrops toward its sides; this further explains the innovation adding the value of this case. The activities are first to extract and then functionalize the mechanism that is going to be applied in the newly designed umbrella, create a concept out of the found mechanism, put it into practice through prototyping and lastly evaluate the prototype. The economic implication of this project seen potentially high given this fact that people who live in coastal regions exposed by high both participation and wind throughout the year and thus keep buying/changing their unfunctional umbrellas. By the end of this project, the plastic industry is retarded and a last longer solution is presented to the market.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The core of this project applies sustainable development itself as provides a more sustained product for the market and reduce the footprint of plastic consumption eventually. In detail, this project offers an affordable and clean energy solution for the current problem of misdesigned umbrellas, as well as an innovation for the current market to be further commercialized - goals No. 7 and 9 respectively. Our idea helps the world to use a sustainable solution out of one of our daily problems rather the consumable plastic industry of the current umbrella market. To achieve, a scientific design cycle is followed: 1) Mechanism extraction from a broad-leaved tree, 2) Concept development stage, 3) Prototyping stage, 4) Evaluation stage, and 5) Conclusion stage.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The idea of this project initiated and inspired by my older brother Sajad Fathi who is an R&D project engineer at Norway. I got a chance a couple of times to visit him at EU, where he started to question why umbrellas remained unchanged ever since, whereas, is full of problems. Then I took this problem from him and thought about it for days, eventually, I wrapped my idea over the fact about the dynamic of a tree in nature; as I believed always nature provides an ultimate solution for our problems, we just need to keep our eyes open to discover it. I potentially seek an investor to help me to test my idea and to commercialize it. Special thanks to my brother that helped me financially to develop my concept insofar. As said, the economic implication of this project seen potentially high given this fact that people who live in coastal regions exposed by high both participation and wind throughout the year and thus keep buying/changing their unfunctional umbrellas. By the end of this project, the plastic industry is retarded and a last longer solution is presented to the market.
I am a youth idea developer with 17 years old studying mathematics and physics in the best group of high-school called NODET in Iran. To be able to enter this high-school, I won the National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents (NODET) grant which requires a chance less than 1% between all Iranian students in the same age as me. In addition, I qualified in the final national mathematics league in Iran called PAYA and got rank 2 in my state (Khorasan-Razavi). From my childhood ever since I used to try to vivify my ideas, play with my mind that sometimes resulted in devasting my toys, however, eventually I lighted up as soon as I got what I aimed for. This particularly helped me to be a person who is good at breaking the taboos/frameworks so that my ideas can be conducted in practice. Although I failed many times, my brother has always been an encourager to me and took my hand to stand up again. To me, seeing this competition, immediately raised my motivation to attend in such an international community, to test my ideas on a wider scale, to taste different people with different cultures, and most importantly may help the world to be a better place for living for all of us regardless the political borders. I raised up by my mom in a town in Iran where she had to defeat three times her cancer; in the meantime, fight with the unfair medical situation caused by USA sanction on Iranians. These all made me robust in achieving my goals in the future and to do my best to build a better world for all of us. Here I am, seeking for a potential investor on my idea to make my small step in this present world.
