Explain your idea in details:
Small and medium scale farmers are confronted with the challenge of having access to the market. This is made possible in most cases by exploitative middlemen which results in low profits, poor harvest for the farmers and on the other hand expensive, unsafe & low quality commodities for consumers. An estimated 15 million metric tons of Nigerian-grown perishable goods, tomatoes, peppers etc. are lost annually due to poor logistics infrastructure and high transportation costs through spoilage and product damage. ZAPPANET's mobile/web based trading platform will provide Nigerian local farmers and agribusinesses the opportunity to connect directly with buyers (Individuals or organisations) without the exploitation and influence of middlemen whilst also providing logistic/transportation services. Registered users will also have access to other value added services such as: weather forecast information, inventory management - to organise sales, credible agricultural information aligned with the interest of the user - This will update farmers with the best and standard agricultural practices to improve their farm yields and products. e.g, if the user registers as a rice farmer, he/she will be provided with credible information related to rice farming. Furthermore, farmers will be able to provide an estimated time of their expected harvest. On the other end, the buyers can view the expected harvest date. We believe this will help tackle post-harvest loss. Enterprise market:Farmers/Agriculturists will register on the platform directly or through any of our local agents. After registration is completed, the products/services and their respective prices (the prices are fixed by the farmers) will be listed on the platform. After all these steps are completed, they will get registered buyers (organisations/individual) who are interested in purchasing the farm produce. Payment is made through our platform. After a deal is completed, the farmer can request for transport service through the platform or our local agents.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
While our aim is to create synergy in the agricultural value chain by connecting players in the agricultural industry, we also have an impact agenda. Some of which are: 1) We want to play a leading role in combating food shortage in Africa through our technological solutions. 2) As our motto is sharing life, we want to bring life to farmers/agribusinesses by increasing the livelihood of farmers, making them financially independent. 3) Increase in profit and quality products for consumers. 4) We are passionate about consumers having quality and safe products for consumers. These objectives assuredly will contribute to some the UN's sustainable development goals which are: 1) No poverty. 2) Zero hunger. 3) Decent work & Economic Growth. We will evaluate our successes from feedback from our clients, number of opportunities & jobs created, level of fairness in our transactions, number of farmers registered, number of successful transactions, quantity of kilograms of farm products shipped successfully and more importantly we will take pride in the amount of payments received by farmers. Our long term vision is to create a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in Nigeria & Africa with extensions internationally where farmers/agriculturists and consumers could benefit from fairly. We are driven by impact, passion, ambition and commit ourselves to integrity.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Zappanets services are priced below the prices of exploitative middlemen - on the average 15 percent. We are planning to go below the average market rate because of our commitments and objectives. Our business model has the static & dynamic packages. In the static plan, we charge 10 percent commission per transaction if the user does not subscribe for the logistic/transportation service. However the customer can still opt for other value added services such as the inventory management system, weather forecast message and news services free of charge. The dynamic package offers a reduced commission rate between 6% - 8% per transaction if the user opts for logistics/transportation services. The rate for shipping depends on the type of goods i.e. Perishable and non-perishable items. The non-perishable items is priced at 0.50 cents per kg while for the perishable items, is priced at 0.75 cents per kilogram. We believe in pursuing a value pricing strategy to ensure fairness in transaction and creating a community of long-term users. We will be working closely with an agricultural expert as our advisory board, and organisations whose end products require agricultural produces e.g beverage companies, food companies etc.
