Almaty Urban Chairlift
Explain your idea in details:
There are two main objectives in this project. First is to propose a new, sustainable urban transport for the city of Almaty - an aerial detachable chairlift along Esentai river. It will connect two main traffic arteries of the city - Abai avenue and Al-Farabi avenue; as well as two major centers of attraction - the old city center (which includes Central Stadium, Drama Theater, Circus, and subway stations) and the new development center (which includes Ski Jumping Complex, Esentai Mall, Esentai City, and Botanical Garden). Currently, there is no straight transport connection between these two areas. Electric motors can function as prime movers for the chairlift. These motors will use the hydroelectric power of the Esentai river. A small power station may be located on the existing dam (No.6 on the map). The second objective is to propose a new, "romantic" urban transport, which may eventually become a major tourist attraction. This kind of transport is not new for Almaty. An aerial gondola lift connects the city with a popular recreation area at the top of Kok Tobe mountain. Another gondola lift connects Medeu skating rink with Shymbulak ski resort. However, these existing aerial lifts are too expensive, and citizens rarely use them to visit Koktobe or Shymbulak. The Almaty Urban Chairlift will connect two "busy" areas of the city. It will be used by thousands of people every day. That is why the ticket price should not be expensive.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Almaty is the major commercial and cultural center of Kazakhstan, with a population of over 2 mln people. Recently, Almaty has been listed among the most polluted cities in the world, and several studies identified cars as a major source of air pollution. The majority of citizens use cars and buses to commute around the city. Abai Avenue and Al-Farabi Avenue are the main traffic arteries - many office buildings are located there. That is why traffic jams are usual for these avenues, especially during "rush hours." Abai and Al-Farabi avenues are connected with three other roads - Nazarbayev Avenue, Dostyk Avenue, and Seyfullin street. However, there is no straight transport connection between the old city center (Central Stadium, 1) and the new development center (Esentai City, 7, 8). A chairlift is an optimal solution to connect these two "busy" areas. A chairlift is an elevated passenger ropeway, which consists of a continuously circulating steel cable rope strung between two end terminals and usually over intermediate towers, carrying a series of chairs. The four-person detachable chairlift can move up to 2400 people per hour with an average rope speed of 5 m/s. The Almaty Urban Chairlift will include two end terminals. One will be located at Abai Avenue, in front of Drama Theater (2). And another one at Al-Farabi Avenue, near Esentai city (7, 8). There will be at least three stations in between - at Satpayev street (near State Art Gallery, 4), at Bukhar Zhyrau boulevard, and Timiryazev street (near Kazakh National University, 5). The main target for the project is to achieve a maximum capacity during "rush hours." Another important target is to use only the hydroelectric power of the river.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The main support may come from the city administration, as well as major developers and business people who currently develop two big projects - Esentai City and Botanical Garden.
