Best Ideas 2019 features all the nominated entries submitted under ‘Submit your Idea’ category. All the entries consist of innovative solutions or propositions for an enterprise that champions the Sustainable Development Goals. They can be on the conceptual, planning, or start-up stage.
Explain your idea in details:
To start, MisFit would be similar to many other apps in that you must create an account, but is distinct because it would also require you to include detailed body measurements (e.g. waist length, height, shoe size, shoulder width, body type, etc), which you could also choose to set later. With these pre-set body dimensions in addition to a picture of yourself, the app would generate an accurate 3D projection of your measurements as a default to use for all clothing stores you visit. This would be the middle tap of the app, which you can edit whenever you´d like assuming some clients will still be growing. The tap to its left would be a scanning mechanism, similar to a QR code, which scans the SKU codes of any clothing item in one of our partnered stores thus projecting the clothing item on your digital body so you can find out if it fits you as well as mix and match it with other items. The tab to the far right on the app would be simply an "Settings/Contact Us" part where you add payment methods or contact us in the event that any item is ever not your exact size to get a full refund, and the tab to the left would be the social tinder-esque swiping aspect described above. We would also offer this service through a website so that customers can online shop knowing for a fact what they purchase will be their size for sure. Only you would have access to your body measurements once you login with your credentials, since I value privacy and that I came up with this idea because I hated waiting in long fitting lines, searching multiple stores for my size and changing in front of others as a kid.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
My targets for this app is to create a world where shopping, for whoever you are rich or poor, is a seamless and efficient process. The way I feel as though this can truly impact sustainable development is in the opportunity that all of us have some, often many, clothes that we outgrew and no longer fit us which can be given to others in need. For this reason, I plan to donate every single item of clothing ordered through MisFit that doesn´t fit a particular customer to a child in need, poverty, or abandonment to one day provide every human being with a wardrobe. Since the entire premise of my idea is to eliminate the fitting process, I will guarantee a 100% customer satisfaction process where any item that doesn´t fit a customer is immediately refunded, returned, and shipped off to an individual, child, or family who I know for a fact would fit in the clothes and truly need them, for free. Since I didn´t have enough characters to expand on this before, I would also annually send camps of employees or even myself to database and take the preset body measurements of many children, teenagers, and adults throughout Africa/Asia so that they can immediately be chosen as recipients of any item that doesn´t fit a customer. A major goal of mine would be to put a shoe on every child who walks barefoot daily anywhere in the world, because I know we all have a pair in our wardrobe which we have outgrown and either sold, passed onto a family member, or thrown away. I would measure this success by keeping track of the amount of wrong-sized clothes we sent to those in need every year as well as the % of them we database annually.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Our business model relies on advertisements on the MisFit website as well as the partnerships we would build with several chains of clothing stores/companies who would pay us to put their clothing items on our "Recommendations Tab", which would exist on the tab where you can scan SKU codes where our app would suggest clothes based on your fashion taste for you to virtually try on, browse and explore, as well as directly purchase if you would like. Lastly, misfit would have a very small service fee when you buy something directly through our app/website, unlike in the store. The application itself would be free, and ideally not include advertisements since I really dislike apps with ads so our main revenue streams would be website ads, paid promotions by clothing brands to place their items on our "Recommendations" tab, and a very small (potentially 3%) service fee when customers choose to use our app to fit and purchase items directly from the comfort of their own homes. My financing source for the programming and development of the application has come partly from myself, my father, and I am currently in talks with an Angel investor who, if I win over, would help propel this as a startup and scale the business for a small equity share. My best friend at UCLA is the programmer of most of the application, with the 3D aspect being collectively worked on by me, him, and an external programmer we plan to pay. In regards to data-basing the actual clothing items from stores so that we can project them on our app, I have recently been and will continue working restlessly on creating 3-10 partnerships our first year when we launch, since I´ve visited stores like Macy´s and Urban Outfitters who like the idea.
I am currently 21 years old, having turned this age on February 14th of this year (2019). I was born in the year 1998 on Valentine´s day, which has always had its ups and downs (such as my parents wanting to go out for a romantic dinner on my birthday). Furthermore, I believe that my background of Egypt also contributes heavily to my motivation to help make the world/my country in particularly a better place through investing in the youth and hopefully someday running for president. After completing an in depth economic review of Egypt, its population, and its history for one of my Economics classes at UCLA, the poverty and literacy rates truly shocked and saddened me and knowing I am one of a very select few who are able to make it out and study abroad I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity. I am also a self-motivated, flexible, and fast learning individual which I feel has significantly aided me in maneuvering any tough situation I come across and utilizing problem solving skills to successfully identify the most efficient and logical way to deal with it. Some awards I´ve received include the AP Scholar with Distinction twice in High School, as well as the High Honor Roll with Distinction.
