Agriculture has huge potential to propel economic growth in Ghana, hence, the proposed business seeks to bring structure and efficiency to a sector often seen an unstructured informal sector with value-destroying inefficiencies. With a business structured to overseeing the efficient supply chain management, marketing, and distribution of staple food commodities, the staple food production sector, often dominated by rural smallholder farming, would be better positioned to be a viable vehicle to achieving rural socio-economic development, putting an end to foreign aid interventions. This is an innovative business model that would blend corporate and social value creation through the transformation of rural smallholder farming of staple commodities into a corporate industry, efficiently managed for yield and profit maximization, whilst using this business structure in prioritizing solutions to targeted rural social challenges. The main business activities of the proposed model are the direct sourcing of staple food commodities from rural smallholder farmers, subsequently undertaking the marketing and selling of sourced commodities in urban consumer markets. The proposed business would engage in retailing (both physical and online) of commodities at low prices under standardized hygienic condition to maintain customer satisfaction and food affordability. One of the main objectives of the proposed business model is to provide solution to the specific problem of rural smallholder farmers market inaccessibility which leads to high post-harvest losses, and thus perpetuating rural poverty in Ghana, through carrying out the main business activities. By so doing, rural smallholder farmers, through the proposed business, would have market guarantee at improved fair market prices, hence further providing a sustainable solution for strategically eradicating rural poverty. The primary expected impact of the proposed business model is the strategic eradication of rural poverty of agrarian rural residents. The target of the business model is to improve the living standard of rural smallholder farmers of staple food commodities as measured by income generation of harvested yield to support his/her household. Thus, the main evaluation of success would be the income growth of smallholder farmers, as income is an essential economic standard indicator. Additionally, in addressing rural challenges pertaining to health and education, the proposed model would have an ambitious target of ensuring that all children of the rural smallholder farmer have access to higher tertiary education or advanced technical education to boost rural skill capacity. Furthermore, the proposed model will target to ensure all rural residents of its business operation has access quality healthcare. The measure for evaluation for these social targets will be the number of successful enrolled academic and technical education completion and the improvement in health communal report as gathered by the Ghana Health Service.

Sourcing of staple food commodities from agrarian rural areas in the Brong Ahafo and Northern Regions, the target consumer market of focus will be on mass consumer market within urban cities of Greater Accra, Ashanti and Western region. In the implementation of the proposed model, the following activities would be conducted as detailed below Supply chain management of staple food commodities (Commodity Sourcing) Sourcing of agriculture staples for domestic consumption will be conducted through structured supply chain coordination in securing and maintaining commodities quality at cost-efficient and effective manner. This would involve direct purchase of staples commodities harvest from rural farmers, which are appropriately marketed, packaged and distributed under suitable conditions for consumer retailing. Retailing and Customer Delivery of Staples (Brick & Mortar Store & e-Retailing) Reiterating, the proposed company will engage in the retailing of staple commodities under hygiene standardized conditions at relatively low market prices for the affordability of low-income earners. The proposed company whilst few operating physical brick & mortar stores would focus on developing a predominantly expansive electronic retailing of agriculture staples which are conveniently ordered via mobile app and quickly delivered in partnership with budding private delivering companies/agents. Strategic Finance of Solutions to Rural Social Challenges in Rural Community of Operation The proposed company with a core objective of maximizing social value, would reinvest 70% of annual net operation profit towards addressing targeted rural educational and healthcare challenges through the institution of educational and health funding programme to ensure access to higher education at the tertiary level as well as training in technical skills through apprenticeship to children of smallholder farmers under company operation coupled with ensuring convenient access to quality healthcare to rural residents.
