Smart Wood Solution
Explain your idea in details:
Our goal is that no plastic waste is wasted but used in a way that impacts are generated! We are using plastic waste to produce a long lasting alternative for wooden construction material in developing countries. Countries like Kenya with a lack on supply of timber and deforestation but increasing populations and demands for timber need an alternative that is 1. available and 2. has signitive advantages for the customers. The end consumers will receive a product which lasts long and saves money, the reseller do not need any legal licences for cutting trees and will not run out of stock and will receive a finished product ready for resale. On the other hand our model includes the communities as we will buy the plastic from them which will motivate individuals, youth groups and institutions to collect and sell the plastic to our company which will generate new income opportunites and minimize wild dumped or burned plastic in the environment.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
For every ton products we will produce we will save 2 tons of wood demand which are approx. 2 trees which would be cutted otherwise. The current market in Kenya for poles and timber is around 8 mio. tons which are approx. 4 mio. trees which will be able to continue storing carbondioxide and reduce global warming. On the other hand we will use plastic which could be burned otherwise and by every ton of plastic reused we can reduce the carbondioxide emmisions by 3.000 tons. With our concept and as a manufacturing company we will employ people and generate new income sources which will reduce poverty.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
To start-up the venture we are seeking for financing the investment for machines and infrastructure needs a lot of capital. To cover the costs and to become sustainable we will generate revenue by selling our products mainly to B2B customers.
I am 37 years old and I am working since 19 years more or less in the field of plastics. I got my Master of Science degree 2014 and worked afterwards as an scientist for the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Germany and later on in the industry as an engineer for process optimzation. Since 2012 I am also very much engaged in Kenya and got passion and vision to use my skills to create impacts while doing business. During an national wide idea contest at Fraunhofer I pitched my solotion and I won that contest. I was granted a 25.000 budget for the technology development which I used to develop and test formulations and to develop the production processes. At the moment I am attending the Borek accelerator in Braunschweig to optimize the business model and where I get a lot of coaching.
