AlexCane for the Blind
Explain your idea in details:
Blind people find it hard to navigate on their own. This calls for a sighted person or a caregiver who acts like an aider in order to increase their mobility. The blind person depends so much on this sighted person lowering his own productivity with that of the sighted person as well. Back in the communities, the blind people are considered not able to do anything hence isolated from responsibilities and others. We are developing an Artificial intelligent walking cane for the blind. This device is capable of detecting either static or moving objects at a distance and pass the message to the blind person via vibrations at the grip. This increases their mobility. The cane is also able to send its real time location of the blind to the caregiver mobile phone back at home at any given time. This reduces the caregiver anxiety when the blind relative is not home on time or not known of where he/she is.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The cane as well describes the person /object in front of the blind person and pass the message via audio communications .This is able through the use of google assistant and google locations to provide the location of the blind and also assist in identifying objects and materials. This reduces isolation and increases the independence of the blind.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We are currently running pilot test in partnership with Kenya Society for the Blind whom we are a corporate partners. We seek to acquire the users through this partnership. We also seek to register the product as a medical device so that the users can acquire it using their health insurance policies. We are in talks with Safaricom to issue us with simcards that are free from subscription for both users and caregivers as part of their CSR program.
