Sustainability Through Green Resort Concept
Explain your project in details:
In order to get the public to believe our quest to maintain the environment, there must be a showcase or proof that it is possible to achieve and in The Frangipani Langkawi, the Eco-walk is a proof and example of minimizing impact of resort operation towards environment. Eco-walk is a one and half to two hours educational tour around the resort to educate guests and public on more than 200 Green practices which include ways to conserve energy and water, green architecture design, composting, recycling, organic farm, sewage treatment system using the aquatic plants and plants and herbs with medicinal value. The guests are able to see, touch, smell and taste and sometimes listen to the sounds surrounding the resort and will able to experience and understand the importance of nature in our everyday life. The objective is to create awareness amongst the public on the ways to conserve energy, water and the environment which they can implement back home. Many hoteliers and universities have followed and practiced on certain issues which are relevant to their organization. Besides eco-walk, workshops for public on environmental issues, educational eco-camp for students, exhibition booths with government agencies to promote green practices, forums & presentations in polytechnics & universities are organized and conducted as part of education programs and training of future leaders.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
We have promoted our eco-walk to the public, tourists and volunteers of Trash Hero as to spread and create awareness on our green practices. For every new staff that were recruited, during orientation they are taken for eco walks and in-house training on the policy and mission on environmental practices in the resort. For year 2018 the number of people who have gone through our eco-walk are 1045 people included our own resort guest, academia and local community. Frangipani staff have been trained and educated to practice waste separation. Food wastes are sent to the nursery for composting. As for recycle items, it will be placed at our own recycle centre. The recycled items then sold to recycle contractor. In 2018, the Frangipani managed to collect RM 5950.80. Apart from that, once a year, 3R competition is conducted to promote recycling and reuse of materials emphasizing creativity and innovation amongst staff in line with our nations goal to reduce solid waste. It is also one of the action plans to create awareness on the items made from recycled items can be made into a business. This year, we have been conducting six sessions of Organic Farming Course targeting the local community in Langkawi to share and exchange knowledge in organic farming. During this course, the participants are encourage to bring the products from their organic garden as well as selling them during the events. This program is to encourage the locals to grow their own food and generate extra income for the family. As for July 2019, we have 126 people attended the Organic Farming Course and hoping that the number will be increasing. As the saying goes "Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime".
Sustainability and future plans
Thirteen years ago when Mr Anthony Wong bought over Langkawi Village Resort he decided to turn it into an eco-friendly green resort as he believed that it is important to take care of the environment to be sustainable. Since Langkawi solely depended on ecotourism related industry, the people must maintain Mother Nature to the fullest. The Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa is the only resort that has more than 200 green practices and has an Environment Department. It is the pioneer in waste separation from recycles items such as can, paper, plastic, glass and food waste & it has led it to build a recycle centre as a showcase to visitors & organizes workshops and seminars to the public to encourage them to do waste separation. Recycling and waste separation are important as they reduce plastic and water pollution and soil contamination. Plus, it will clean the island from rubbish by the beach and along the roadside. For this island to maintain its nature and clean beaches, all parties must work together to make it a success. Thus, collaboration with other NGOs and government agencies is pertinent but Frangipani Resort is the main reason that triggered the awareness for No plastic in Langkawi. Since its operation The Frangipani Langkawi Resort and Spa (FLGK) has been supporting NGOs in every way mostly those that are championing on environmental issues. we are also working closely with government agencies in their efforts to ban plastic bag and reduce the landfill in the island. With this collaborations, our goal towards sustainability in tourism can be achieved and awareness can be spread effectively to the locals and tourist.
Your profile as an entrepreneur
I am Delma from the island of Borneo. Being 32 this year is a great challenge for me to explore another level of life! To be someone that wants to create a change in the community is not easy. Working in the environmental field showed me a lot about the critical issues that the world facing like the plastic pollution, accumulation of landfills, the climate crisis and many more human made disasters. In my personal view, the awareness is very important to make a change in community. So here In Frangipani Resort I was given an opportunity to spread the words on environmental issues to the fellow staff, local community, friends and family. Working in Frangipani makes me realized how important it is to be sustainable in a hotel industry and how to convince others to be more environmental conscious in their daily lives especially with all the climate crisis nowadays. Consistency is the key to this success. Everything is not easy at the beginning but when we are consistent in spreading the awareness and educating the young blood eventually everyone will share the same goal which is to become more sustainable in every aspect of living.
