Explain your project in details:
We are facing a tsunami of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol levels owing to todays faulty lifestyle and high consumption of simple sugars and refined foods and high stress levels among others. It is time to go back to traditional eating practices and incorporate more whole foods which are less processed and refined in our diet. Whole grains are good carbs because they are highly nutritious and offer many potential health benefits to the body. They are particularly high in minerals like iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and fiber which are essential for good health especially the heart. Peal millet and Sorghum are considered to be the least allergenic and most easily digestible grains available. Since they do not contain gluten, they are a wonderful grain alternative for people who are gluten-sensitive. They are rich in the essential vitamins and minerals which the body requires to maintain good health and prevent diseases. They are high in fiber offering a higher satiety value thus aiding in keeping you full longer. The fiber also helps regulate bowel movements. They release sugar at a slower and consistent rate keeping you going through the day. They are a Perfect meal for each age group from pediatrics to geriatrics. Our objectives include; alleviating hunger with natural food that will also promote good health and well-being in the society at the lower base of the social pyramid in Namibia and Africa At large. Our activities are buying grains from local farmers as well as importing the deficit from around the globe, process it into flour and sell it through retailers. Currently, we are experiencing challenges in selling the flour to communities who dont consume these grains as a staple food. Therefore, we aim to manufacture pasta products, cereals and snacks to overcome this challenge.
Impact of your enterprise on sustainable development
Global warming has had a share of its impact on the globe. Namibia and some parts of Africa are facing a prolonged drought season which has led to deaths related to hunger and malnutrition. At the rate at which global warming is happening, it is unfortunate to envisage that climate change to only worsen thereby also worsening its effects. Pearl Millet and Sorghum are some of the grains that were consumed in the ancient days around the globe and have since been replaced with wheat, maize and rice. They are however still being produced by communities who depend on it for survival (staple food) and also as poultry feed by commercial farmers. Due to the health and wellness benefits as alluded to earlier, we intent to re-introduce Pearl Millet and Sorghum as a tool to fight hunger and diseases. These grains are drought resistant and can grow and yield well in harsh climatic conditions when compared to their counterparts. In addition to alleviating poverty and promoting health and well being, the project will have the following benefits to sustainable development: a. Employment creation: The project is envisaged to create employment to the majority of the less educated as the processes involved do not require specialization. Employment creation always reduces poverty which is also one of the problems being faced by Namibia. As part of its Vision 2030, Namibia endeavors to be an industrial hub and this project will go a long way in achieving this national goal. It will also help in making the continent self-sufficient. b. Contribute to economic growth of the country through corporate taxes and levies as well as employees taxes. The quantity of products manufactured and sold will assist in measuring the success of the business in the long run.
Sustainability and future plans
Our key partners are Namib mills who are our supplier, COSDEC Swakopmund who is providing us with a place to work from and mentorship services as well as our customers. Our Key activities at the moment are; procurement, fermenting, milling, packaging and selling the flour from our factory shop. Our plans for the future is to cultivate, procure, process , package and sell grain products such as Pasta, Cereal, snacks, baby food and animal feed. Animal feed will be produced from waste that will be as a result of production. Our target markets are the people at the lower base of the social pyramid in Africa and those who are gluten intolerant, farmers and parents of babies. The initial project which is currently operating from COSDEC Swakopmund SME incubation centre is funded by the owner with her personal savings to the value of N$50 000.00. That includes the Milling machine, 1 computer with an accounting software, printer and office furniture as well as stock. For a fully fledged factory manufacturing the products we wish to introduce, we need roughly N$1000 000 for the equipment as well marketing and other operational costs. In order to control the quality of our grains; we intent to acquire land and grow the grains our selves. This will also ensure sustainability of our business in the long run as we will become self- sufficient.
