Pakasa Agro - Marketplace
Explain your idea in details:
The Ugandan agricultural sector is mainly constituted of smallholder farmers accounting for 85% of the farming community. Smallholder farmers usually cultivate less than one hectare of land, often produce crops, fish or farm animals for family consumption with little surplus for the market. They are oblivious of market prices and lack transport means to take the surplus produce to the market centers; hence they sell their produce to local traders usually middlemen who pay them low prices. On additional that, their access to information about; genuine agricultural inputs suppliers, climatic change adaption strategies, available financial services and the general knowledge on the various modern agricultural strategies is meagre. This made it imperative for me to come up with an idea of establishing an online market place I termed as Pakasa Agro - Market place to enable a direct linkage between the farmers and buyers in an inclusive manner at the same time building their capacity through the use of technology. Technically, the platform will be an online portal inform of an e-commerce website and a mobile app designed with different pages integrated together and categorically organized according to the products and services together with their prices offered by the different market players in the food supply chain in Uganda and at international level. The platform will contain matchmaking features to match users bids and offers for commodities and services. Each player will have to subscribe to this platform at a fee except the farmers. Each subscriber will have her/his own interactive page in form of a profile with information about their business in texts, images and videos forms. These platforms will also contain an interactive blog giving users a chance to share ideas and inspirations. Further still platform will be connected to online payment features enabling online transactions.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Pakasa Agro-marketplace portal and mobile app will economically empower millions smallholder farmers, agricultural input suppliers and other indirect beneficiaries from poverty and will also promote sustainable agriculture hence reducing hunger problems in Uganda. We target 1000 subscribes per month using the portal and 10,000 downloads of the mobile app per month. Some of our subscribers will include, Individual and Smallholder farmers cooperatives, agricultural inputs dealers, commercial banks and other financial institution offering financial services to farmers, government and non-government organization in the agricultural sector in Uganda among others. And our success will be measured through the following; the number of smallholder farmers in Uganda who seize the market and get better deals for their produce through the platform and the mobile app, the number of farmers who access to genuine agricultural inputs and better financial services through our mobile application and the e-commerce portal, the number of farmers using the app and the portal to access our open source resource center ready to equip them with better farming skills such as quality control, value addition, post-harvest strategies, farm management among others. Finally, the number various market players in the agricultural supply chain in Uganda who have managed to network through our portal and mobile app.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Our implementation strategy will involve; Conducting a feasibility study; This will be in form of research to help us determine the relevance of the portal and the mobile app to the to the target stakeholders. In this case the stakeholders are; smallholder farmers in the different regions of Uganda, banks and other financial institution extending financial services to these farmers, agricultural input suppliers, and finally the government and non-government organizations in the agriculture sector. After, we shall go ahead a design a prototype of the portal and mobile app. After the proto-type, we shall engage stakeholders (end users) to test the prototype. If the prototype is successfully tested, we shall launch it and start embarking on business development, which will include; establishing the management team, implementing the marketing strategies, establishing distribution channels and finally registering subscribers. Each subscribe will have to pay per a monthly fee which will determined by the management team and 5% commission will be charged per transaction conducted through the portal and the mobile app.
