Biofortifed orange maize instant porridge flour
Explain your idea in details:
My Biofortifed orange maize instant porridge flour is one of such porridge flours that has been fortified with the main ingredients like soy beans, millet, avocados, bananas, and vitamin A biofortifed orange maize. This product apart from being designed to improve nutrition status of malnourished children, it has also been designed to alleviate vitamin A deficiency (VAD). Vitamin A deficiency is a common nutrition issue among poor communities and developing countries as the preformed sources of vitamin A (meat, eggs and cheese) are expensive to be purchased by the people living in such communities as most of them their total earnings per day do not exceed one dollar and hence, most people especially children are prone to VAD which its consequences include night blindness or even total blindness. So this product has been made in such away to meet vitamin A demands; again, vitamin A is only absorbed in the presence of fat and where fat is absent then vitamin A consumption is useless and as such, this flour has been fortified with fat so that all requirements for utilisation of vitamin A are all found within this product. In trying to make this product easy to prepare, the cooking time has been reduced; with mere additional of hot water and stirring makes this product ready to be consumed. So this product has been designed for kids, school going children, pregnant and even lactating women.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
This porridge flour once in full operation, it will have great and positive impact on the lives of people living in poor communities and all those prone to vitamin A deficiency. This product on the other hand, will also help to contribute on millennium development goals on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. This product will help to reduce poverty through job creation as many people will be employed to help in the production and running of the company. Again, most of the ingredients being used in this product are locally available and farmers do not profit much due to unavailability of markets; but with the coming of this company , will raise the demand for such farm products like bananas, millet, and avocado and in return reducing their deterioration as they are perishable products (bananas and avocado) and hence giving farmers highest returns. Again, this product will help governments save a lot of money spent on vitamin A supplements which are provided in hospitals and these supplements are very expensive and instead, these money will then be diverted in other sectors to enhance extra need and development. Lastly, this product will also improve on the maternal health as it has also been designed to meet vitamin A demands of both pregnant and lactating women.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
At the moment our company is not that much established as our production is still at low rate due to lack of supporting equipments and even a proper and big production site. Instant porridge flour production requires sophisticated machines like extruders and dehydrators which are very expensive and as such at the moment we are not yet being able to meet our goals. But once established, we have plans to extend our collaborations from a team of 5 expertise to a team of ten ( we will all be university graduates). And our business model in our plans was to conduct this business as business to business model whereby we will be selling our products to governments and non governmental organisations like WHO and UNICEF. But at the moment due to financial constraints our model is of business to customers and we are meeting their demands by using funds from our personal servings and profits generated afterwards. So for efficiency and better returns in near future, we are planning of producing some of those ingredients on our own: we have a plan whereby we wish to purchase a 100 hectares land and turn it into a full time farm.
