SANKOFA PLASTIC ERADICATOR(Sambre Chrochet)
Explain your idea in details:
Sakofa basically deals with young ladies hand weaving with crochet yarn and crochet pin to form a basket which can be used for groceries shopping, shopping in the market for vegetables and other ingredients, and in any for of shopping which can bring plastic carriers home since my main idea is to eradicate the number of plastic carriers that are used for packing items from shopping for easy carrying and handling, whiles educating individual on the impact of plastic in our world. Sakofa basket is an affordable way of saving money at the shop since shop owner use money to purchase this polythene bags and the individual will also save an amount due to the strength and durability of these baskets. Whiles creating employment to help increase the the betterment of the youth in the society.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With self examination, there are so many baskets but are made of plastic which can get broken with time and would take a longer period to decompose which is not enviromentally friendly, with my volunteer experience with Plastic Punch and Environmental 360. I realised that most of the plastic carriers end up in the water bodies that I see when we go for cleanups which greatly affects the habitants living in them, my idea Sakofa is to achieve at least four of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being that is the reduction of plastic pollution from plastic waste in the society which causes illness due to contamination such as malaria and cholera. Preventing the June 3rd June flooding diseater which caused the death, injury of many and loss of properties leading to poverty in my country Ghana, due to plastic and polythene blocking the drainages from repeating. Goal 8: Decent Job and Economic Growth, provide an avenue for individual to learn and weave with crochet yarn into basket and paying them every month hence creating employment. That is Goal 13: Climate Action, to prevent air pollution which is caused from the burning of plastic as a form to get rid of waste. I decided to develop this idea when I once saw a turtle coiled in a plastic band with view of the turtle it could be seen that, it was tangled in the plastic from baby because of the shrinkage of the shell at that spot where the band laid, so I self researched on where most of the plastic and polythene came from and realized it is from shopping. Goal 14: Life Below Water, to help and prevent these plastic from ending up and polluting the waterbodies hence protecting the habitants living in it.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
The model of the business will include crochet yarn and hook, with the concept of blending social, economic and environmental together which are the triple bottom line globally. Firstly individual will be trained on how to hand weave the basket. The training session would be conducted regularly by me and few of my friends who know how to weave both physical and through video conference. Stuff will also be trained on how to advertise these baskets in the country and beyond if possible. A number will be provided for staff to be readily available to respond to queries and concerns regarding this concept. Also, during the implementation process videos and photo shoots will be taken to showcase the importance of these baskets to the society and world at large, this will give individual the knowledge about the use of these baskets. This will develop ways of financing the implementation of these basket since most NGOs are finding ways to reduce plastic pollution in the world. And the first samples and payment of staff will be financed by me from my piggy box. Also, there will be a collaboration between individuals and lead entrepreneurs who are also against plastic pollution.
Matanawui Bridget a 24 years female who stays at Elmina at Cape Coast in Ghana, working as a customer care representative currently with acting, communication, writing and I.C.T as my skills and passion to see kids educated, plastic pollution eradicated and literacy eradicated, passionate with volunteering, a student at Cape Coast Technical University offering Tourism as a course. Biggest dream is to build a place for the poor who are sleeping on the street to pay just something small like 10 CEDI's a month to have a place to sleep no matter the amount of kids they have and I will add more money to that 10cedis which will be used to pay for the educational needs of their children to eradicate illiteracy and poverty in the country. With time I hope to make my housing free for the poor. And create a job avenue for the unemployed to help them fend for their families. My motivation for my dream is actually because I have been a victim of that situation, it is really not something anyone would love to experience. Sleeping at the market place, and having nothing to eat with the door locked outside whiles you are inside the kiosk all because you are forbidded from sleeping there, the mosquito bite it has not been easy. It really saddens me when I see people who sleep outside beaten by the rain and bitten by mosquitoes, with nothing to eat. And seeing a turtle coiled in a plastic on a regular beach cleanup made me motivated to try and make my voice to be heard by all since the animals in the water bodies can not talk for themselves on the hardship they are facing.
