ECO FRIENDLY AND CHEAPER ENERGY FOR HOUSEHOLD USE
Explain your idea in details:
Home Briquette Innovate converts the natural and available agro waste into briquette fuel that can go a long way in alleviating Kenyas energy problems and increasing the availability of sustainable cooking fuel for consumers. The briquettes will be made out of charcoal-dust that is largely considered as waste, dry agricultural wastes at pilot stage (small scale) and during scale up, we will link with the sugarcane processing plants and maximize on the bagasse from the firms to carbonize and produce carbonized briquettes. This encourages national energy independence, reduces other types of pollution (thus improving overall public health), encourages innovation and saves money as the briquettes are cheaper as compared to charcoal and other household heat energy sources. Benefits of the briquettes Environmental; Efficient burning rate, low emissions, saves trees, mitigates climate change, contributes to managing solid waste Economic; Cheap, generates income, creates employment, easy to make Health and Safety; reduced health risks, safe to use indoors, increased variety of food able to be cooked, increased safety of women and children Social; reduces time and energy collecting firewood, compatible with daily chores, group work and team building Objective to a financial lesson learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic, partly income generated from the sale of briquettes will support in financial education of the households that will fit within the initiatives and beneficiary framework on healthy household money management. Home Briquettes innovate will also major in URBAN GREENING in commitment with residents, local administration and institutions both public and private devoting to a green future. The enterprise will also increase food security and household economic strengthening through training the households that will fit within the initiatives and beneficiary framework to propagate and plant fruit trees to earn and improve their wellbeing and cater for their and childrens nutritional needs
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With regards to Sustainable Development Goals; The venture will ensure; access to affordable and reliable energy while increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix (SDG 7); this will be through production and distribution of daily 2.4 tonnes of eco-friendly briquettes for heating and cooking.( 800 tonnes yearly). Sustainable consumption and production patterns that include using eco-friendly production methods and reducing the amount of waste (SDG 12); this will be through the utilization and prioritization of daily 2 tonnes of the eco-friendly briquettes by majority of the households for cooking and heating. Indicator to be measured are the number of sales. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy (SDG 13); This will be through the urban greening initiative that objects to plant 300 trees per urban centre of the enterprise operation. Indicator to be measured are the number of trees matured. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss (SDG 15); this will be through the urban greening initiative that objects to plant 300 trees per urban centre of the enterprise operation. Environmental benefits include landscape enhancement, recreation, education, and general well-being; a habitat for wildlife; climatic modification; the control of air and noise pollution; erosion control; the protection of catchment areas for urban water supplies; and the productive use or safe disposal of urban wastes. Indicator to be measured are the number of trees matured. End poverty in all its forms everywhere (SDG 1); This is through the chain of employment created in production and distribution of the eco-friendly briquettes. Indicator to be measured are the number of direct and indirect employees
Plans for implementation and sustainability
Kenyas failure to transform her natural agricultural wastes into charcoal briquettes has resulted in an increased exploitation of its primary forests causing an even greater shortage of the woody biomass necessary for making firewood and charcoal. This results to increased time and effort in collecting biomass for populations cooking energy needs. Home Briquette Innovate will convert the natural and available agro waste currently being burned, into a useful fuel that can go a long way in alleviating Kenyas energy problems and increasing the availability of sustainable cooking fuel for consumers. There are currently only a handful of briquette producers in Kenya and availability of the briquettes is nowhere near mainstream. Part of my business aim is to get ahead of the market, being one of the first Kenyas briquette producers to sell to a large cross section of the domestic market. Home Briquettes Innovate is established with the aim of maximizing profits in the briquette production and distribution line of business both in Busia County and throughout key towns in Kenya and sell our briquettes both in retail and wholesale to a wide range of customers who make use of coal stoves and coal furnace et al. Home Briquette Innovate is a sole proprietorship business owned and financed by Mr. Elvis Mathews. The business is open to any external business partner who shares the same school of thought. These are the areas we intend to generate capital from; Grants Generate part of the start up capital from personal savings Source for soft loans from family members and friends Financial institutions loans One of our major goals of starting Home Briquette Innovate is to build a business that will survive off its own cash flow with little need for injecting finance from external sources once the business is officially running.
Climate Change will affect us all, so its rational that we all have to change our mindset, and more than that, our way of living. Human activities, such as the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and unsustainable agriculture contribute to climate change, which decreases the availability of nutritious food and clean water, destroys ecosystems and secure living environments. According to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 2019, The poverty rate of Busia County is at 66.7%, electricity access at 6%, 39% of the 70% Kenyan youth population unemployed. With my increasing strong social and environmental awareness, I felt the power to transform our societies. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Development at Egerton University and employed qualitative and quantitative approaches of research techniques in evaluating varied non-governmental projects for over 3 years coming up with effective reports that capture progress, key achievements, lessons learned and challenges. With this regard, I have been maximizing on my research skills researching on clean energy easily adopted by the Kenyan households. Majority of people still rely on conventional charcoal for cooking. Therefore, a viable and sustainable alternative to wood charcoal is needed to prevent further destruction and assist people in reducing their fuel costs, as well as utilizing waste that would otherwise be left, causing further environmental pollution. This drove me hard to briquette making. I am 27 years of age and boast of excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills qualifies me for the educational and technical and soft skills required for this task.
