One For The Boy Child (OFOTB)
Explain your idea in details:
For the betterment of the community at large and for the development of the country, both boys and girls are needed. Focusing on Girl Child while excluding the Boy Child is detrimental; large number of dependents, low skills development and little entrepreneurship. Socially, there will be failed marriages, dysfunctional families and high incidences of Gender Based Violence. One For The Boy Child will therefore close this gap through advocating for gender equality and ensuring that excluding the Boy Child while over-focusing on the Girl Child is foregone and should henceforth be deemed repugnance. This initiative shall deal with boys of between ages 10-17. Objectives include: 1. To increase the number of Boy Child enrollment in school by atleast 30% in the next 2 years 2. To offer entrepreneurial literacy through teachings to the Boy Child 3. To advocate for gender equality 4. Transform the lives of atleast 5 boys in a group of 10 who will be ambassadors of change 5. To nurture talents 6. To nurture the boys into responsible men in the future. Activities to be involved include: 1.Boys of between 15-17 years will be introduced to basics on entrepreneurship to assist them in startups after highschool education 2. Supporting and nurturing talents 3. Engaging the boy child in stimulation activities especially during holidays 4. Organizing motivational sessions with motivational speakers 5. Undertaking mentorship programs. Some of the innovative approaches include: - Initiating an opening of minor accounts where the children could be able to save little amounts of money. This will help them have startup capital at the end of their highschool studies or even money to continue with their studies
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
One For The Boy Child is in line with Sustainable Development Goals number 5 and number 10. Much attention has been given to the Girl Child leaving out the Boy Child, which leads to increased conflicts with the law and which steers poverty. This will hence pull down the United Nations' agenda. One For The Boy Child majors on the positive and economic impacts towards sustainable development, whereby on the social impact: 1. There shall be an increase in the number of children enrolled in schools 2. No gender shall be discriminated or excluded thus bringing about harmony 3. There shall be an end to Gender Based Violence 4. There shall be a reduction in the number of dysfunctional families 5. There shall be a reduction in violence, truancy and drug abuse which are brought about by low self esteem, frustration and lack of direction The economic impact will be as follows: 1. Resources shall be shared equally 2. Educating the Boy Child on entrepreneurial skills which will lead to reduced unemployment and development the country economically 3. Nurturing of fertile, focused minds that will engage in resourceful activities which will steer economic development The Boy Child in this initiative shall be evaluated on a quarterly basis. This will be done to ensure that the education and services offered are of essence and will also help in tracking their development. The evaluation shall involve scrutiny of their school performances;both class performance and discipline-wise. The initiative shall also embrace reports from these children's caregivers and assess their overall behaviors . The long term expected impact will therefore be zero cases of gender inequality and reduced inequalities, where everyone shall enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030
Plans for implementation and sustainability
One For The Boy Child will be based in the slums of Kibra in Nairobi, Kenya. The initiative shall only deal with boys of between ages 10-17; any male gender in this age bracket qualifies to participate. No amount of money shall be expected from any child joining this initiative. Recruitment shall be done at our offices after creating awareness through educating the boys, teachers in schools and parents/caregivers on the importance of this initiative. I have a target of reaching atleast 10 boys from different schools. To help in tracking records and evaluation, each and every participant shall have his file where information shall be kept including his quarterly progress reports both in school and at home. One For The Boy Child shall also partner with different schools where other sessions and other activities shall be conducted aimed at educating the Boy Child. These sessions will be different from the sessions offered with our initiative. Mentorship sessions shall be conducted during school holidays so as to give an opportunity to participants who are in high school and boarding school. For the vulnerable participants, One For The Boy Child shall do proposals aimed at outsourcing for donations from organizations and well wishers. This initiative shall also take up the task of outsourcing for sponsorship opportunities which will help in seeing the Boy Child get the desired education. As a source of finance, One For The Boy Child will set up social enterprises which will stream money back that will help in sustainability and that may offer employment opportunities for participants/beneficiaries who have completed their studies.
My name is Brian Odhiambo, I am a 21 year old Kenyan who has got the interest of transforming a community. The community to be precise; The slums of Kibra in Nairobi. I was born and raised in this slum set-up. Currently, I am working as a volunteer in Haki Group, a community based organization in Kibra, as an administration officer and a Community Health Volunteer. This only means one thing, I am fully aware of the challenges experienced there. Therefore, I noticed that transforming this community would be exigent if I fail to bring everybody on board; I need both gender to do this. It requires no rocket science to realize that the boy child has been excluded and on the opposite side the girl child has been given much focus. Being a male, raised and having worked in this slum, I know what the boy child is going through. The boy child is facing tremendous challenges and not even a shoulder to cry on is given, he suffers alone. There is a high level of unemployment and with the entrepreneurial skills I possess, I will also step up to educate on the same; the impact will be reduction in theft cases hence development of the country and reduced unemployment. One For The Boy Child as the name suggests will be a Boy Child initiative that will help in fighting for the rights of the Boy Child and advocacy of gender equality. The Boy Child must be brought back on board for the transformation and the betterment of the community at large. It's time for the Boy Child. It's time to embrace gender equality.
