Nafasi - School Upgrade Project
Explain your idea in details:
The Nafasi Project exploits the intersection of design and basic education needs to transform inefficient learning spaces in the slums to functional education hubs restoring hope and improving the quality of education. We are a collective of designers partnering with forward-thinking organizations with the goal of installing as many functional shipping container schools to level the playing field for the underserved. Operating as an innovation house, Urban Human Design Studios believes a decent learning space is the beginning of an enabling environment. Slums are as a result of systemic neglect which leads to infrastructure nightmare across homes and schools. Most of the schools in the slums wouldn't pass any safety standards for human habitation let alone learning purposes. However, they remain the only available option for parents and kids in underserved communities. We have witnessed cases where two sets of students from different grades share a classroom due to overcrowding, sanitation is a huge problem because most lack running water as well as toilets and play areas due to the limited space. Most live a life balanced between too little and nothing therefore they take education as an uncertain means to an end. The Nafasi Project envisions model schools that take into account their challenges and constraints on the ground to deliver affordable and functional shipping container schools that work for students, parents, tutors and the local administration. Our redesigned schools provide adequate classrooms, play area, administration offices, water, electricity, a library and toilets.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Innovation is an economic imperative. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals needs accelerated interventions in education. These interventions should be framed within the broader development framework of inclusivity and partnerships. We have partnered with like-minded organisations to design, upgrade and deliver functional education centres Decent learning spaces are a catalyst for quality education and economic growth translating opportunities for individuals and families. This, in turn, strengthens communities and helps markets grow. It's the foundation of a safer, more just, and more prosperous world for all of us. By providing students in underserved communities with an opportunity to compete fairly we raise hope and level the With our bespoke innovative, scalable and affordable shipping container model schools, our vision is to install at least 10 schools in every slum in Nairobi with a capacity of 250 students. All the schools will be equipped with necessary eco-friendly facilities to enhance sustainability. Our evaluation of success will be pegged on performance and attendance improvement and lastly motivation of staff. Very few tutors are willing to serve in slum schools due to the circumstances associated with the locations. Providing an enabling environment will greatly improve the numbers of tutors and volunteers.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We work with a collective of multi-disciplinary creatives ( graphic, interior and architects) to customize the schools to the location profile. Our design model is agile in that it must meet all the criteria for fulfilling a space that supports the basic principles of a modern school. Our model is crowd-funded, we believe everyone has a responsibility to make the world a better place but most importantly we'd like the project to be community-driven. Our team will design schools based on locations and post budgets. Well-wishers and communities are allowed to equip us both financially and resource-wise. Resource donations that will make a significant difference include shipping containers, windows, doors and metal supplies. With everything on the ground, we are able to install a school in 2-3 weeks and hand over to a local board that helps in running and management of the facility.
Growing up, all I wanted was to be a bus driver. Thankfully, my career goals have come of age. Backed by 11 years of hands-on experience spanning in media, NGO's, Advertising Agencies and FMCG's, Robert is a thirty-six year old multi-faceted creative dedicated to solving social problems through communication and human-centred design. Design is an amazing tool to solve social-economic challenges. As a Design Thinking Champion, we exploit the intersection of design and technology to solve modern-day challenges. Robert is currently the Creative Director of Urban (Human) Design Studios, a boutique innovation house that partners with Governments, NGO's Development Agencies and Innovators to transform community service. Serving people in the slums is my passion, I grew up in one ( Dandora-Gitari Marigu) and I'm very conversant with the challenges most students undergo. Abject poverty can only be eradicated through provision of education and quality education starts with an enabling environment. I'm a firm believer in the hand holding model because it creates a ripple effect. Someone gave back through me and I'm ever indebted to them. By providing an opportunity to a kid in slum you also equip them with power to do the same for another human being and together we can transform the world.
