Explain your idea in details:
We are a start-up aspiring for creatively reusing of Solid Waste Materials and turning them into useful products. Our major objectives are to reduce the amount of solid waste going to the landfill by awaring people through using of recycled and upcycled products and create a market where upcycled and recycled products would be preferred over the regular ones. Since, the problem of solid waste landfill has created distress among the people and environment either by carbon emissions, pollution, soil degradation and many more. In order to tackle this problem, one of the key solutions would be to reduce the amount of solid waste going to the landfill. In addition, we are also looking to build a market where recycled and upcycled products would be prefered over regular ones. For this, we are researching and identifying potential solutions to make it happen. The innovative parts would be - relatively low priced upcycled products (Since, upcycled products are comparitively expensive in the Nepalese market), focusing more on utlities and designs that would help people prefer upcycled products. And lastly, building a eco-system and platform in a long run by connecting individual recyclers and upcyclers along with the environmentally conscious people, recycling institutitons and other relevant stakeholders for trade of upcycled products, exchange of discussions, partnerships and projects that would open the door to larger recycling and upcycling eco-system. Our idea of starting as a producer of upcycled products to the platform economy for the recycled and upcycled products has boosted our confidence to tackle this real challenge of solid waste landfill.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
We have categorized our impact into three years model. For the first year, our impact would be awareness among the general people about the existence of upcycled products. Generally from our market study, what we have found is that many people are unaware about the word 'Upcycling' and Upcycled products. We are working very hard and consistently by creating content about upcycled products and their importance. In addition, after we produce upcycled products within a year, our major impact would be general public encountering with upcycled products via various platforms where we sell or channelize our products. Impact for second year would be when People will be gradually starting to be conscious about existence of upcycled products and then be starting to study about their need which obviously will be our key contribution towards SDG 12 of 'responsible consumption and sustainable production.' In a third year, we are aspiring to go for platform based economy where we will also be creating economic opportunities for individual upcyclers working for good environment. This would help us achieve various aspects of Sustainable Development Goals from decent economic growth to sustainable production and also most importantly SDG 17 which is partnership for global goals.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We are studying about various business model that could be best fitted into our business. We have already researched about Business model canvas which also has provided us with a dimension and vision to critically observe various aspects of Business model canvas where we have been identifying our business channels, revenue model, market segments, networks and many essential aspects. For the initial phase, we haven't planned yet to apply for any investment deliberately but yet would be glad if any offer would be made if we propose them. Although, since we are 6 team members, we have collected our initial investment through bootstrapping and individual basis. Because of our activeness in social media pages and with our commitments for greener environment, we have already been approached by various social businesses and collaborators for partnerships in a long run which shows us greater hope and also have increased our confidence in the market and for our mission. For long run, we are planning to sustain via investment and boosting our production and marketing not only for the niche market but also for the greater segments and market area.
I am Ajit Bhatta. And I am one of the core team members or co-founders of our start-up Samsara Creation. I am 25 years old. I have recently completed my Masters Degree in Development Studies from Kathmandu University. I have also been working in various development organization in the field of Education, Political Governance, deliberative planning, Sustainable Development Goals. As a Development Practitioner and advocate of Sustainable Development Goals, I have always wanted to create a solution that not only gets limited to advocacy and campaigns but also turns to be a tool to resolve the challenge of sustainable development. Due to this factor, I have been highly motivated to start this initiative along with my friends. Behind this, I also have various factors to start the journey of a Social Entrepreneur. I was awarded with SDG Students Program Certification as a SDG Coordinator by SDSN Youth at Vatican Youth Symposium 2019. I was being acknowledged as one of the best SDG Coordinators at SDSN Youth global. This is because of my contribution towards the SDG by implementing actions at my University. Starting SDG Students Hub and mobilizing university students in various advocacy programs and activities was my integral role as a SDG Coordinator. In addition, the best part of our start-up is that all of the 6 team members are from the same SDG Students Hub that was started under my leadership as a SDG Coordinator during 2018. This could be the best motivating factor for all of the 6 team members of our Hub given the fact that all of us were committed towards greener and sustainable environment.
