MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS CLUBS IN LEARNING INSTITUTIONS (SCHOOLS TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL)
Published on June 22, 2020 um 07:08
Explain your idea in details:
The problem or condition of mental illness in Tanzania has been increasing over years. Various researches being conducted in Tanzania hospitals identify main challenges as lack of human resource for mental health, lack of drugs, problems in insurance coverage for mental disorders, stigmatization, no prioritization of mental health care in the Ministry of health budget, inadequate training of human resource for mental health and worse enough although they are few in number, they become allocated to other departments rather than cater for higher demands in psychiatric departments. However, I believe this challenge can be solved by involving the community at large (families inclusive). Therefore, I came with an idea of developing "Mental Health Awareness Clubs in Schools" from lower classes to universities. This is because most of adults are victims of mental health problems due to variety of reasons; drug abuse, rape, and family conflicts inclusive. Thus the clubs will help primary school students obtain knowledge of mental health care, at secondary school obtain knowledge and abstain from behaviors that may affect their mental health since students are highly exposed to technology (for example; watching pornography using mobile phones, join immoral groups), and at University level become the mental health champions and pioneers in educating their communities on mental health care. It will also alert and motivate university students to pursue mental health related programs of study thus address the challenge of shortage of mental health human resources in Tanzania. Further, for those who will become leaders in the Government or any sector will prioritize mental health issues in the budgetary allocations as they already know the importance. More research will be conducted and for those of ICT Profession will be eager to design better apps and programs for better service provision between health workers and psychiatric patients.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Referring to post 2015 call to include mental health in the SDGs, "Health is a crucial prerequisite for Sustainable Human Development and there can be no health without mental health". Thus my idea focuses on first ensuring awareness to people on mental health agenda since the major source of increasing mental health cases in Tanzania and Africa at large is lack of awareness. My idea will be a platform for better health to all people enabling them to participate in achieving all SDGs without being left behind. It will ensure that people are more healthier to get involved in bringing more opportunities for everyone, maximum utilization of the most crucial resource above all resources 'people' (From the HR Perspective). Mental Health will enable sound mind in people to participate in ending poverty and hunger, have quality education, and achieve all other sustainable development goals (SDGs). It will once and for all eradicate the ideology that in order for one to be seen unhealthy in mental part, one must be completely chained or hospitalized or pick dirt substances and wastes in the streets but replace it with the knowledge that one might have a mental disorder but if well treated, counselled and receive proper therapy can be very productive and contribute to sustainable development.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
At primary schools, students will receive awareness from mental health practitioners, participate in questions and answers sessions, art competitions. Teachers in collaboration with mental health practitioners will identify students with mental health problems and offer counselling plus treatment if needed and their parents will be consulted to participate in helping their children. At secondary schools, students will receive awareness from mental health practitioners, participate in essay writing competitions, debates, writing articles to be displayed on notice boards and in school magazines. During their holidays will organize visits to families and offer awareness. To maintain sustainability of the program, at university level students will develop blogs an write awareness articles, participate in world's mental health day events, present various papers at various platforms on mental health, create awareness through sports events, and educate community through programs set. After succeeding in the above steps, i will convince the ministries responsible to introduce the clubs at workplaces in order to promote better working conditions even for those with mental health disorders/diseases thus making the idea more inclusive leaving no one behind. So far i have no financial support rather than my own salary but i hope it will work out when it bear positive fruits and will attract more collaborators rather than only the mentioned health practitioners and students as mentioned earlier.
