Growing up, I have experienced children with special needs struggling with education, repeating classes, depressed and at times become victims of school drop out. I also volunteered to teach young children and its whereby i realized the difference in levels of their understanding and learning different subjects. This inspired me to find out why some children are fast learners and others are slow learners although to me they seem to be geniuses. I came to realize that Tanzania has no early detection and intervention system to identify children with special needs so that they are taken to pursue education in their special needs schools instead of struggling in the normal education delivery schools. Worse enough, parents are not aware of the special schools and some are not aware if their children are of special needs category. They even force their children to normal schools even when they are advised by medical practitioners/teachers simply because they consider those schools to be for disabled children like the blind, deaf while such schools in Tanzania include curriculum even for autistic children etc. Children with Dyslexia and autism have their own way of learning things thus when taken to normal schools become depressed and end up emotionally tortured as they become last performers in academics, slow in learning and at times end up dropping out of school. Worse enough in Tanzania parents consider such children as 'those who don't want to study'. Thus, by introducing this program, such children will be early identified, parents will be made aware of their children nature of learning thus reduce the problem to a large extent by taking them to schools with teaching methodology that fits their children thus become future change makers.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
The impact of this idea on sustainable development is that it will cater for the requirements towards achieving sustainable goal No. 4 (Quality Education), No. 10 (Reduced Inequality) and No. 3 (Good Health and Well Being) of which will led to achievement of the remaining SDGs. Such children will be able to unleash their potential and be productive. Such children are considered the most creative and genius ones thus require mostly proper teaching methodology to show and prove their potentiality to the world. Without proper teaching methodology and continuing to locate them in schools that don't match to their way of learning will just subject them to stress and some end up becoming school drop outs. The idea itself is sustainable in a way that it will be a continuous project to help children with special needs in my country from one generation to the future generations.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
My idea will be implemented under the objectives of identifying children with special needs, assisting parents and teachers to interpret the behaviors of children with special needs, develop education intervention plans for the children and train their teachers to identify and handle students who appear to have exceptional needs (including the gifted and talented but fail normal subjects that other children perform well) by referring them to their special needs schools. The sustainability of my idea will be in a continuation manner as children are enrolled each year. Also the students referred to special needs schools will be monitored to make sure they are taken there instead of being transferred to other normal curriculum schools by their parents or returned back home since every child has the right to education. Currently i have no any collaborators except for those who will understand my idea and support me or collaborate with me.
