Orange Peel Detergent
Explain your idea in details:
Main objectives: Goal 1: To reduce wasteful consumption and production of food, our goal is to use the un-eaten parts of food in order to create a subsidiary benefit apart from the consumption of the fruit's vitamin C, thereby strengthening the human environment by reusing its peels. Thus, creating a positive impact on the human population. Goal 2: Landfills are a serious predicament in present-day society, where globally, the world is producing a colossal 1.3 billion tons of landfill waste annually, with a projected increase to 2.2 billion tons by 2025. Hence, our goal with the Orange Peel Detergent is to start to relieve stress on the landfills, by starting to divert the location of our orange peels. This product would likely influence other products, formed from utilizable landfill waste, to be taken into the market. This would slowly reduce the methane emissions from landfills to a controllable amount. Steps to take: 1. Once we have collected the majority of orange peels in Hong Kong, and citizens are locally invested in our business, constantly donating orange peels, it is essential to source the orange peels from a landfill in order to produce more of our product in a timely manner. In order to keep supply costs low, we should contact a local landfill corporation in our base headquarters (Hong Kong), in order to supply sufficient orange peels. 2. Approach a company to send a mixture for the detergent. Vinegar shall be used since it is effective at killing bacteria, dissolving hard-water deposits, and cutting through grime at a fraction of the cost of brand-name cleaning products. 3. Use Vinegar since it is especially effective when mixed with orange peels, since the hybrid between Oranges' citrus, and vinegar's acidity will allow it to counteract stains, icky buildups, brines etc.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
With the donation of unused orange peels, and the cheap price of vinegar => cheaper than Tide, Persil, and Purex. The intended impact of the orange peel detergent on goal 12 of the sustainable development goals is: In order to reduce wasteful consumption and production of food, our goal is to use the un-eaten parts of food in order to create a subsidiary benefit apart from the consumption of the fruit's vitamin C, strengthening the human environment by reusing its peels. By using "waste" to create products, we would be able to reuse usable waste, instead of producing new material in order to create products. Hopefully, this could have an influence on others to begin to implement this as well. Through this, we would be able to create a positive impact on the human population. The intended impact on goal 13 is: The goal with the Orange Peel Detergent is to start to relieve stress on the landfills, by starting to divert the location of our orange peels. Thus, we would be able to eliminate methane gas generated from additional waste created by orange peels, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect, reducing pollution. Target 1: Remove 75% of orange peels from Hong Kong landfills Target 2: Build a self retaining system, where people are constantly donating their orange peels to our service, and not disposing of it in the trash can. Measure 1: By calculating the total amount of orange peel waste after an extended period of time. Measure 2: Ensure that the majority of the Hong Kong city is aware of our company, and make sure that there is always less than 10% of orange peels than the beginning amount in Hong Kong Landfills, and instead seeing that they are entering our bins.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
In order to start our business, we must start small to collect orange peels. In Hong Kong, we shall place buckets within, and outside of places that sell oranges; such as supermarkets, coffee shops etc. This will allow consumers who eat the orange upon purchase to dispose of it quickly, where they would not need to carry trash around with them, as well as benefit the environment. In addition, a popular place where people keep and consume oranges is their homes, therefore by placing these orange peels at the lobbies of residential areas, we would be able to collect a mass amount of these orange peels. As we are all familiar with the recycling bin, we understand that there is no food section to it, only a glass, plastic, and paper section. However, by building these around the city, they would act as the "orange recycler", attracting more people to dispose of their peels into these bins. By using the techniques of Pathos, Ethos, and Logos through mediums of posters, flyers etc. People would understand the meaning behind this product, and would be more motivated to donate their peels to us. It will be important for us to directly contact the government in order to gain authority placing bins and flyers around the city. Collaborating with the government will also enable us to use orange peels in landfills resulting in a large sum of orange peels to enhance our business An industry that we would be working with is landfill companies located in Hong Kong. This would be to gain orange peels to grow our business, and improve global warming produced by landfills. One company would be the West New Territories Landfill (WENT), which has 61 million tonnes of landfill.
I am 16 years old. I am a student at Discovery College, in Hong Kong. I am also an aspiring golfer, playing for the Hong Kong elite junior squad. Since golf is a game that I love, and have put immense amounts of effort into, I wish to play this game for as long as possible. In order to achieve this, I recognise that the air quality around the world has to be better. As golfers, we are out on the golf course for 5-6 hours a day, therefore, breathing is majorly important. However, humans have created immense amounts of waste, which are sent off to landfills creating methane gas emissions, which is a prominent contributor to global warming. According to the OECD, it is estimated that by 2050, Global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are projected to increase by 50%. If this were to be so, our lifestyles would completely change, since the air quality would be increasingly more harmful towards our lungs. This is the opposite function of the oxygen produced in the world, as it is supposed to replenish our lungs, not harm them. Furthermore, if this were to happen, millions of us would likely have to stop being outside, playing sports that we love and are a part of us. Although I myself, am not able to remove all global warming, I have decided to create a product that would be able to begin to help global warming, by removing a substantial amount of a substance from landfills. From this, I decided I wished to make something useful from this, in order to put this waste to good use. Thats when orange peels came to mind, as I remembered that their great citrus would allow it to become a great cleaning source.
