Artificial intelligence controlled robotic trash boat to harvest floating trash from Drainage

In this project, we propose a system that is very hygienic and cheap that uses Artificial Intelligence algorithms for the detection of the garbage. Once the garbage is detected the system calculates the position of the garbage by the use of the camera only. The proposed system is capable of distinguishing between valuables and garbage with more than 95% confidence in real-time. Finally, a robotic arm controlled by the microcontroller is used to pick up the garbage and places it in the bin. Concluding, the project explains a system that is capable of working as a human in terms of inspecting and collecting the garbage. The waste management systems which the researchers also referred to as automatic garbage detection and collection consists of a dozer, frame of the boat, collecting basket and a box encasing all the other important components. For the boat to be equipped with artificial intelligence, several machine learning algorithms are used. The system uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for detecting garbage and the position of garbage is calculated using a camera. The position of garbage is then fed to a Microcontroller which then essentially controls the navigation of the boat. Object detection is done using TensorFlow(A python library used for Neural networks) and NumPy(another python library used for computation of arrays). The Object Detection API will be deployed using a Raspberry Pi integrated with a Pi camera. Autonomous Navigation is achieved using rudders and air propulsion which is controlled using a microcontroller. To collect the garbage, a dozer connected to 2 arms, which are hinged by servo motors, and load is calculated by the IR Sensor.
Expected impact of your idea on sustainable development
Waste management is one of the most significant problems throughout the world. Contemporaneous methods find it difficult to manage the volume of the solid waste generated by the growing urban population. The proposed model can be implemented in the canals and sub canal of big rivers like Ganga and Yamuna, in order to save these rivers from urban trashes and wastes.alongside this can work in the subsection of these rivers, various lakes, streams, and estuaries until it eventually reaches the open sea directly, for harvesting floating trashes. It will reduce the huge manpower and harvest floating trash autonomously across a large area of the river and can operate in tight bends and corners. It is proposed that the initial and maintenance cost is low for implementing this project in Indian urban Drainage with efficient output.
Plans for implementation and sustainability
We envision a future where fleets of autonomous boats cruise its many canals to collect trashes, or self-assemble into floating stages and bridges. To further that envision, we have given new capabilities to our fleet of robotic boats which are being developed as part of an ongoing project. This model is at the idea stage and all the modeling and simulations are being done. There is no financing source as per now. We a team of six are working on it on our own.
I am Abhishek Nanda a 20-year-old undergraduate student in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering discipline at the National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh, India. During a trip alongside the Godavari river of India, I came across the floating trashes those are polluting the water resources drastically. The trash collection system was manual and very much hectic for the big rivers.so this led to me think about an automatic method to use the cutting edge technology to solve this problem and I came up with the above idea.
